How do you treat a fever?

Just curious about how you treat high fevers in busy bee toddlers.

DS has been running a temp of 102+ (and this morning, it was in the 104 range) under his arm since last evening. We've tried cool compresses, tepid baths, and even tylenol--so far, none of the above has worked to bring it down for more than a few minutes at a time.

Plus, he clearly feels bad, but wants to run and play at the same time, so when I hold him, he cries to get down, but the minute his feet hit the floor, he completely melts down. A few months ago, he would've just nursed for a long time, but now, he doesn't want to do that for more than a couple of minutes because there's just so much to do! So...how do I help him?

At 102 I would do just as you have, trying to keep him cool. At 104+ and unresponsive to meds I would get into the ped, just to have things checked out. If he is running and playing he is probably just fine.

I give my children infant or children's advil, it's the only thing that seems to really help them.

Other than that, loose cotton clothing, as long as they seem to be doing fine I just let them be.

If they are unusually tired or their temp doesn't come down with meds (tylenol/tempra/advil) then I would go see the dr too, just to be on the safe side.

This.

My son had his first real fever a couple months ago. It never got above 102. If he seemed uncomfortable I gave him some motrin...but for the most part I just let him be. He wanted to nurse and sleep all day so that's what he did. When he wanted to play I let him as long as he still looked like he felt up to it. When he started looking tired I'd bring him over for another nap.

He recovered in a day
