Is this standard? (Diabetes testing)

My first pregnancy I did the 1 hour glucose tolerance test, and failed, but passed the 3 hour, and it was never an issue.

Now I'm pregnant for the second time and failed the 1 hour test by 1 point. They wanted my level at 129 or lower, and mine was 130, so I did the 3 hour and again passed it just fine.

Now my OB/GYN is telling me that after the baby is born I have to take the 3 hour test again, because I apparently have a 50% higher chance of developing diabetes later in life. But I never had to redo the 3 hour test after the birth of my son and I'm confused as to why they would want me to redo the 3 hour test even though I've passed it just fine two other times.

So is this standard procedure, because I had to take the 3 hour test in both pregnancies or is my OB/GYN just trying to bully me into unnecessary testing. Has anyone else went through this?

That sounds ridiculous to me. Especially since it was ONE POINT on the one hour. Considering the margin of error on those tests I can't believe they made you even take the 3 hour. No one has said a word about testing again post-partum.

I would decline. Clearly you have proved both times you don't have GD. I also failed by 1 hour this pregnancy but tested just fine for the 3 hour. Next pregnancy I am declining the 1 hour as well as it has so many false positives and is not a reliable indicator of GD. Unless I suddenly develop some risk factor for GD I am skipping it altogether next time.

I wouldn't do one after your pregnancy. If there was a possibility, then I would see a GP after the birth, but 50% is a large margin to try to make you do the test again.

I am thinking about skipping the GD test myself during this pregnancy anyway. I don't know, I just don't think it's her job to be concerned about what might happen later to you in life while you are not pregnant. She is an ob, not a specialist in diabetes care.

I just waned to add that my doctors office considers 133 passing 1 hr.

I just took my 1-hour (haven't gotten the results yet) and was told that the cut-off for the 1- hour is 130 or above in line with the ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology?) guidelines. 129 should pass, but they made me do the 3-hour with 129 last time because it was "borderline."

IF you had GD, then you would have a higher risk of diabetes later in life, but not *right after* the birth. And you don't even have GD! I would decline or just tell your OB you'll discuss it with your PCP and follow up if you feel you should.
