Can this Knee be saved? Looking for preventative advice if you have it.

So I'm old and fat. Always been physically active as my health permitted and am currently coming off several months of illness. So I have zero strength/stamina.

My knees often hurt when working out after a deconditioning break. Usually as I gain strength, it gets better.

However, my right knee is not getting better/stronger. It will somewhat heal if I take a few days off but is aggravated when I workout again.

It's the patella area.

So what can I do to help it get over the hump/prevent knee problems down the line? Would I be overfunctioning to ask my doc to send me for some PT?

I do low impact knee friendly stuff right now although I would love to go back to interval running/skipping/galloping workouts at some point (in the distant future no doubt).

What do you think?

Background - I dislocated my kneecap when I was in High School (it was gross...I passed out). I ended up having knee surgery because my kneecap kept coming out of place.

I am wondering if you have scar tissue built up.

I think you should see an Ortho Doc and possibly a Physical Therapist. Sounds like you need to find out the extent of damage to your knee.

But I am not a Doc. Just coming from the persective of my situation.

Have you been to a chiropractor? Sometimes the angle of the hips put more pressure on the knees...

Thanks. I'm hoping to avoid surgery. I don't need it now, but if I keep pushing I can see it in my future. Ugh.

I have dislocated the other knee in the past which was a pita.

This is ligament/muscular in origin. I think the joint is good. I've had some serious charley horses in the knee though.

Sometimes chiropractic can help thinks you wouldn't expect. for instance, carpal tunnel syndrome. May be worth a try, anyway.

I'll look into it. I can actually assess my pelvic alignment myself and everything is in line. Even Steven.

Seeing a PT could help by getting an exercise program focused on strengthening your thigh muscles. It could only be one or two visit for a home program. You'd want to do that before any surgery anyway, so now seems like a good time!
