nipple pain after 7 months of uneventful nursing

My nursing relationship with my son has been going well for these last 7 months. Out of the blue last week - I had a sharp pain in one of my nipples. I thought something just got pinched while pumping, but the pain hasn't subsided. No breast pain. No sign/feel of clogged ducts. I had thrush with my daughter which seemed more like a burning pain - this is more sharp and stabbing. Can something be clogged within the nipple that can cause the pain? It really only hurts while nursing or pumping --- although it does seem more sensitive to clothing.

Any ideas? Remedies?

The correct terminology escapes me here, but do you happen to have a little white spot (can be tiny, that you wouldn´t notice right away - alwasy in the same spot) on the nipple...something like a clogged nipple pore - not a plugged duct.

Something similar happened to me recently after MONTHS (years) of uneventful nursing - DS is 3 yrs. old - and all the sudden, this annoying clogged pore that took forever to go away...and it was really uncomfortable and so annoying - particularly with the touch of my bra or shirt.

Mine unclogged spontaneously, but after quite a few weeks...after so much time, I just didn´t want to fuss with it. But I know you can use a sterilized needle to try to lift the very top layer and unclog the pore, if that´s what it is...I did it a couple times at the beginning and it worked, but you have to be very careful and make sure the needle is sterilized and you hands are very clean - the idea is just to lift that very top clogged layer, not penetate the nipple with the needle. then your LO nursing will do the rest.
