BF and Surgery ???

Hey,

I am getting surgery on my knee next friday and wonder how this can affect my breastmilk. My 6 month old ds nurses frequently and does not take bottles, he really needs to nurse even after he gets his lunch solid..which is the only thing we have started to introduce. I am worried that I am not able or allowed to bf after surgery. I know I was able to nurse after I had the c-section, but I think general anasthesia is different right??

The orthopedic docter is not the one I am going to ask cause he probably will just give me a general recomendation or so without much of a clue??
Anubody here has any Idea wihat to do??

general rule is when you feel stable enough to hold them, you can nurse. i just had surgery on my neck about 10 days ago. i nursed right before surgery and then nursed again about 3 1/2 hours after surgery. i told my anesthesiologist that i was nursing and she worked out what meds to give me that would have the least affect were they to actually go through to my milk. she did not give me the amnesia med (i want to say versed?) so i do remember hearing some talking during the surgery.

here's a link to dr. hale's online. the basic rec's from the dr's (cya) are pump n dump for 24 hours, but dr hale says one pumping if it makes you feel better, but it's not even really necessary in a healthy, full-term infant. millie was fine but i was a bit sore! oh, and be sure to check your pain meds on hale's, too. good luck!
