newbie question

Ok, so dh doesn't want me to spend the $12.50 on patterns, so I'm doing this on my own without any clue I'm trying to make a newborn diaper. What does "blind" elastic mean? I would be using a serger.

Who just votes I spend the $12.50 and buy the pattern set anyway? LOL!

I am a newbie sewer so no clue on the blind elastic, I would google it if you get no responses here.

I do know you can find free diaper patterns online thought so I would look around.

I have pliers like this which are great for doing snaps on diapers, bags, clothes. They are worth every penny and snaps on diapers hold up better than velcro.

Have fun making diapers!

Rita's rump pockets one-size are free and have a great fit, no kidding....

My take on blind elastic means you are inserting the elastic in between two layers of fabric and sewing it sandwiched in there, not actually having the elastic on top and visible, so it is "blind". The rita's rump uses that method for ruffled edges on the legs. It takes a little practice but soon becomes very easy and looks wonderfully cute!

I have bought 3 or 4 diaper patterns, and I know how it is when dh doesn't want you to spend $!! They are mostly worth it, imo.

For "blind elastic", download the rita's rump one-size pocket diaper pattern here: http://handmadebyrita.blogspot.com/2...t-pattern.html

In the directions for sewing the rita's rump pattern, she gives detailed instructions for sewing elastic blind - her instructions really helped, and I agree the results are very cute.

I just made my first RRP last night and another this afternoon using the blind stitch on the elastic - can you use the regular zigzag stitch in place of the 3-step zigzag and have it work properly? I looked up 3-step zigzag and the Singer website has a picture of it. I don't have that particular stitch on my machine, so I improvised with another one, but it looks sloppy.

Yes you can use a regular zigzag. I did for my RRP and they were fine

The ottobre pattern is TERRIBLE. There are MANY more that fit way better. I make my own pattern but I'm looking up patterns I used to use. There was one I really liked but I'm trying to remember the name of it.

For blind elastic on serged diapers, I learned a way on a diaper sewing board I frequent. Basically you stack your layers together, use a basting stitch a stitch a straight line at the elastic points where you want it to be. You then thread the elastic(I use a safety pin) on the inside on the stitching line, secure the elastic, then 3 step zig zag, or regular zig zag down the entire length, making sure the elastic is snug against the basting stitch, so you don't miss catching the elastic. Comes out great this way. I could never do the true blind elastic since I seem to miss a lot of the elastic, plus I use lastin more than polybraid and the lastin is almost impossible to feel/see between the layers. You can remove the basting stitch if you want, but I don't bother since you can't really see it anyway since the elastic is gathered.

For some great patterns, I like the darling diapers newborn pattern www.darlingdiapers.com and an awesome one size diaper pattern is the sprout snap found at www.doddlebee.com

What a great idea for the elastic! Thanks

Here's a quick update: I have made 3 newborn diapers from the darling diapers pattern. I have room for improvement, but they turned out I'll post pictures later. I've had trouble getting all the layers of fabric when serging and messed one diaper up completely because I tried to fix it, lol. I do have the the metal pliers and used those for the snaps, they're awesome! Thanks, everyone!
