Yet another reason to drink WATER and avoid packaged foods....

Oh boy, there was a study done recently to see lead levels in kids drinks and more.

This article introduces the subject with the criteria and explains 85% of tested foods/drinks have high lead levels.

And this is the full list of all the products tested, which also shows the ones tested that DO NOT contain high lead levels.

I am so thankful we mostly drink water and eat fresh foods!!!!!

Wow, thanks for posting. Thankfully this doesn't really affect us directly, but gives me further reason not to purchase any of these products.

Eeeek! all of the grape juices I buy for shabbat for DP and I to drink are on the lead list (except the imported sparkling grape juice made from wine grapes which they didn't test it looks like). I've never seen "Old orchard Healthy Balence Grape" juice, the only one that had no lead. though the testers are in the bay area, so I presume it's availible here...

Although I seldom buy juice for our family, I have been known to buy fruit cups as a treat, on occassion. Maybe it's time for me to learn how to can my own.

Is this canned or plastic packaging?

Gah. We don't eat any of those things, but!

We eat frozen vegetables (in plastic bags), canned vegetables in the winter (esp. tomatoes), and some canned beans.

I wonder if those also have high lead levels.

So is this from the packaging? Or something else in the processing?
R.W. Knudsen and Martinelli apple juices I know are in glass bottles, wonder if that's a factor in not being lead contaminated.

so is santa cruz, and knudsen grape, and those were contaminated.

I'm thinking maybe it's from the soil?

My understanding of this was that it was from contamination in the soil in older orchards and vineyards.

Yeah, honestly I'd assume that theres led in them from the plants themselves drawing it up from the soil... seems awfully alarmist, really. I'm all for avoiding lead, but I don't believe for a second you can do so by avoding canned juices/fruits.

So how would one avoid lead then? Would the fruits/veg themselves have less lead because they're not as concentrated as the juice? I mean, if I make my own juice, and there was lead in the soil where the fruits were grown... how would I ever even know that?
Wonder if they'll work out a way to remove/avoid it. Then we could have "unleaded" fruit juice, like the gas stations - ha!

The only way I can think to avoid lead in fruits/veggies would be to test your personal 'source' and find out - some certainly have lead in them, some maybe not. It'd just be a huge, super costly process of elimination...

If this is the case, then the list of which fruits and juices are "safe" is kind of useless, because it will vary from year to year depending on where the companies purchase their fruits.

If you look at your vinegar bottles, they may also have a prop 65 warning on them. It shocked me too when I learned about it. It is in the soil. This most likely means it is also leaching in to the water too. The industrial revolution began a chain of events that is culminating in the poisoning of the species on earth, and the creators of the technologies, humans, are included in this. I do not know how it can be cleaned up. I wish that all the technology would be halted where it is and some things be eliminated altogether. I do believe it is like a pp conjectured, it all depends on the individual place and the individual fruit plot. I do not believe it can be avoided, even by avoiding juice. Anything in the soil will be in the water too. Maybe our DNA will kick into high gear and mutate us all to be able to handle all the environmental problems.
