Is it my fault she's "chunky"??? - Page 2

Chunky babes are the best!!! My guy was 20lbs at 5 months, such a rolly polly and somewhere around the 95%. . .but now at 8.5 months he's barely 22lbs (still big, but quite a slow down in weight gain, he gained 1 lb a week for a little while there!). Its very normal for EBF babes to chunk up fast and then to slow way down with weight gain once they start sitting/crawling/moving. My brother was one of the fattest babies you ever saw and now he's a skinny man--it's certainly not indicative of adult obesity or anything!

Enjoy your happy, chunky babe!

My DD, at her 6 month appointment, was off the charts for her height and head circumference, and 90th percentile for her weight. Our pediatrician said it was wonderful and that my milk must have good stuff in it

I asked her when I should start worrying about her weight and she said right now was wayyyy too early (DD is not crawling yet). She said that once DD can become more active and starts eating more solids, it'll even itself out. So, don't sweat it at all. I'm not.

Be happy! Your DD sounds beautiful and healthy!

My kids have always worn at least twice their ages until 2, then they wear size 2 for ages while they thin out. All of my kids had lots of rolls and were off the charts, but they're all really thin now. People are amazed when they see the pictures of my kids as babies because they were so chunky and now so thin.

If your dr. gives you a hard time, it's because he's not up to date on breastfed babies. There really should be 2 different charts for breastfed and formula fed babies. I've had people walk up to me and say "I can tell he's breastfed!" just by looking.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I of course think she's perfect and the cutest baby ever seen...I'm hugely proud and will be crushed if the ped doesn't feel the same way! Everyone else does, and I've never gotten a single negative comment, so I'm not really sure where my worries come from.

AnnetteMarie, I love the idea that their fat rolls are padding for when they're learning to walk!

AFWife, those wrist and ankle rolls look familiar...

She's fine! She's a baby! My oldest was humungous. Just huge. Michelin tire baby. I was very small as a child and still am. She was like 30 lbs at 6 months. But she slimmed down when she started walking and is now a tall, thin, beautiful 9 year old.

Bathtime is gross isn't it? I was always shocked at all of the nastiness that gets caught up in there.

I had a fat EBF baby as well who is now a very average sized nearly 5 yr old. I miss the fat, enjoy it while it lasts!

Another big EBF baby here - at six months he was 95% for length and off the charts for weight. Pediatrician was perfectly happy with his growth, and said it was a normal pattern for EBF babies. Don't worry!

i didn't read ALL the replies so i'm not sure if someone mentioned this but all three of my kids were HUGE...in fact my oldest had rolls on the back of her head she was so big. i often asked the docs if she was ok for weight and they said as long as she was staying relatively consistent with weight gain. he said if she all of a sudden started gaining or losing a lot then we need to check it out.
ds just turned 2 and he is 36 lbs!! my girls slimmed out around their 2nd bdays.

Our baby was tremendously fat (his chins had chins) at 5-6 months. Now, at 7+, he's scooting around and has started to lean out. And he gained some height, so the chub is distributed differently.

Our ped (who is very evidence-based and pro-BFing, but not crunchy at all) raved about his fatness. He also said that in his experience babies alternate between getting plump and getting longer.

Don't worry! Big is beautiful!

Ha, especially under the neck! Even with her head reclined as far as it will go, I still have to dig.

Lalemma, that's good to know about alternating width and length...I bought some 12 month capris for her the other day and they're regular pants-length on her!

Just in case anyone was curious, she was not only not FTT at her appointment, but she had jumped percentiles (upwards) for height, weight and head.

She's still tiny compared to other babes, but it's good to know she's growing well!

yay

So happy to hear that

She is one lucky baby to have such an attentive and caring mama. Happy to hear the good news

I always got grief with ds because he was too thin. And I nursed him all the time as well. It's mostly genetic I think. Don't worry about it.

Yet another big EBF baby here! I don't honestly remember how big my son was at 6 months. 23 lbs? Something like that. He's around 25 lbs now at 8.5 months and at the top of the chart for height and head circumference still too.

Unless there's some other cause for concern-- your little one isn't meeting milestones, seems unhealthy in some other way-- I don't think high weight in an EBF baby is worth worrying too much about!

I posted a similar question a few months back. DS2 was 20 lbs. at 4 months and now, at almost 6 months, is a little over 23 lbs. He's by far the biggest of my 3 children at this age, EBF just like the other two, sleeping the same...everything is just the same, except his size! I wouldn't worry one bit about it--some babies just grow more quickly than others, and you know the food he's getting is the best possible.

I always STRIVE for chunky babies My roundest was 23lbs at 6 months. He is now almost 16 and is 5'9 and 125 and wears 29x30 pants.
BF fluff is the best. Dont worry about your family YOU are growing a happy healty baby
