Craving salt water?

What (if anything) does it signify (besides the fact I'm weird :P) that I crave salt water to drink but "regular" water makes me want to throw up. Literally not only don't I want it but if I drink more than a few sips at a time I really do throw up. I know I've read people saying that salt water makes them want to throw up but I'm clearly having a bassackwards reaction.

ETA: And does anyone have any suggestions for getting more water into me? Because I'm 28 weeks pregnant and nursing two so I know my hydration needs are huge right now and it is the hugest struggle for me to get and keep it down

I think it's pretty normal to crave salt during pregnancy, and important to listen to your body and respond accordingly! I have been having pretty annoying heartburn (I am also 28 weeks), and find plain water makes it worse. I fill a 1 qt. jug with a good pinch of celtic sea salt (a couple of seconds of hot water from the tap next to dissolve), a good squeeze of fresh lemon, and then (room temp.) filtered water. I find this really easy to get down and it doesn't seem aggravate my heartburn like straight water.

Maybe your adrenals are beat or you need more minerals. Usually people with adrenal fatigue will crave salt. I say drink it but make sure to use a good sea salt like celtic sea salt especially since your pregnant! Congrats!!! Do you like coconut water? Or maybe make an herbal tea to stay hydrated. Nettle infusions would be great for you as would red rasberry leaf tea!

Excellent advice!
It does sound like your body wants more minerals. Most hfs have bulk sea salt. I drink 1/4 tsp in water daily for the minerals and b/c I love it!

Craving saltwater could be pica. Which, as others have said, can stem from being low on minerals. Make sure you're getting enough cal/mag and iron to start, since those are some of the big culprits of deficiency at that point in pregnancy.

I craved smelling rubbing alcohol in my pregnancies, which is also a form of pica, until I corrected my mineral imbalances.

I would also consider zinc. Do you have white spots on your nails? Low stomach acid or digestion issues? Maybe a high quality mineral supp is in order for you? I think Thorne makes a good one.

Do you have post nasal drip? That's why my mom could only drink carbonated water for a long while--it forced her to sip slowly enough that she didn't wash the mucous down into her stomach. The mucous is why she'd throw up with regular water.

And it isn't that the flavor of salt water makes people sick, it's that having too much salt in the water acts as an emetic. A moderate amount of salt would just be like broth.
