Sounds like my house.

We have a wire shoe shelf in the closet for shoes. When you take your shoes off you are supposed to put them in the closet. Sometimes everyone needs reminding or sometimes I just do it myself.

We have a wicker basket with a lid by the door. All shoes go in the basket.

What about something like these?

The kids put theirs in the coat closet as soon as we walk in. In the winter, coats get hung up, hats come off, etc all at the same time and place.

If we had room, I would LOVE something like this entryway bench with baskets.

Simple, four shelf, pine bookcase-we finished ours with a clear coat of poly. We got inexpensive chickenwire and stapled it to the back of the shelves to provide a back. Everyone gets a shelf for their shoes. I have a couple of these in the mudroom because we also have lots of cleats, athletic type gear, etc. Muddy boots (farm boots) are on mud mats on the floor.

We just have a very untidy pile It occasionally gets cleaned up (like if we're expecting company or something), but mostly its just a pile of shoes on a mat thing... We all have multiple pairs of shoes/boots (me: hiking boots, muck boots, sandals, shoes; DH: fire fighting boots, hiking boots, shoes, sandals, running shoes; dad: hiking boots, sandals, work boots, shoes; ds1: rain boots, shoes, sandals... in the winter we rotate the sandals out for winter boots

We have a nice basket right next to the front door, as well. Works for us!

The shoe shelf just inside the door.

Our foyer is a hallway ... we have a bench that sits in the hallway, under the bench are two wicker baskets that holds all of our children's shoes. Between 3 kids, there are a lot of shoes (at least 2-3 pairs each). Our shoes go next to the bench (usually 1-2 pairs of are most worn shoes) and the rest go in our bedroom closet.
