Question about Yard Sale Pricing

I was just wondering what my fellow MDC mommas would think of this....DH and I have been planning a yard sale for awhile now. We just found out we are pregnant so I've moved up the yard sale to this Saturday so that I can actively participate and not be the whole time in a couple of weeks and useless. Here's the question...DH and I are thinking of just making everything $0.50 instead of taking the time to individually price everything since we're moving quickly to pull this together. Big items would be excluded (entertainment center, dryer, etc.) but everything else would abide by the $0.50 rule. What do you think? Will this work?

I like it when a sale is priced like this. I have had a sale like this myself. Just make sure to post plenty of signs saying that things are .50 unless otherwise marked. Sometimes people still dont get it though...

Sounds good to me! Unless of course you are getting rid of like a new TV

It will be much easier for you and your customers to have a flat rate like that.

That is a good idea. Just make sure you have plenty of quarters for change. Or if you want to have a couple of price bands, you can organize a whole .50 cent, $1 and $2 tables. Instead of pricing by item.

Good luck and good $$$!

I think 50 cents is way too cheap for everything. You can't even buy things at the goodwill for less than a couple of bucks.

I never individually price my yard sales and rarely do I ever see one that is. Generally clothes are $1 or $2 and the more people buy the better deal I give them. Then the rest of your stuff people will just ask how much it is if they are interested. You will make a significant amount more money to replace things you may need if you ask for a reasonable price.

I never pay $1 or more for clothing at a yard sale. My top price is 50 cents. So I think you have it priced right.

Sounds good to me!

I think it sounds great. Like others, I never pay more than $1 for clothing, with very few exeptions. I bought a four piece suit for my son for $3, and two homemade dresses for my DD for $1 each but other than that I stick to .25 or .50.

I agree with a PP that if there are some things you want varying prices on, have a .25 table, .50 table, $1 table, etc.

Thank you all for your responses! We successfully completed our Yard Sale yesterday. We made a little money and got rid of lots of stuff! Thanks again!

I have thought about the idea of making a yard sale be "no reasonable offer refused" kind of name your own price...because really I just want the stuff out of my house..lol

I've actually heard of people having "Free Sales" where they lay everything out and just say "Come and get it!"

Our church has a sale every spring, and we don't put prices on anything. We put up lots of signs that say "Give as you have been blessed", and a few signs with suggested prices. Sure, we get people who take 5 bags of stuff for $1, but other people give $10 for 2 books, so it all washes out in the end, and it certainly is a LOT easier than pricing things, or keeping track of which table something came from.

This year we made over $1200, after advertising expenses. What didn't sell was donated to the Salvation Army thrift store.
