My daughter is 18 months. When she started patting her diaper whenever she peed/pooed and asking to be changed whenever she was wet or dirty I got a toilet seat and a little Ikea potty. She loves to sit on both of them, and will frequently ask to sit on one or the other (or will go back and forth constantly).
I want to encourage her, but she's not making the connection between sitting on the toilet/potty and actually DOING anything there. She'll pee on the floor or ask for a diaper before doing anything on the potty or toilet.
She sees me on the toilet, I tell her what we're doing and encourage her to try when I'm done (or sit on the potty if I'm on the toilet).
How else do I help her make that connection? Is it something that will come on it's own with age?
Also- because she's so young, I'm not doing the "all or nothing" approach, I'm worried it will make it not fun and she'll stop trying entirely. And because she's so interested as it is I'm not planning on a reward system. I want her to do it because SHE wants to. I just need a gentle way to help her realize what the potty is for.
