I am one of those people who got "stuck" where I live - I wanted to move, we can't afford to move anytime in the foreseeable future, and I decided (after seven years of planning to move!) that I had better find a way to love this house after all.
This was the last thread where I posted on my project.
Here are some links (the "done" photos are first, followed by the "in progress" and a few "before" photos - you might recognize some of the pics from the "clean, clear house" thread of long ago):
Living room/dining room
Kitchen
Hallway
Playroom (lower level of our split-level)
Our bedroom is also done, was done previously, and I will post pics of that eventually, but not today.
The hallway and living room/dining room are a pale buttercream color, the playroom is a deeper butter color with white trim, and the kitchen is supposed to be sage but turned out a little minty, so I'm planning to do another coat of a similar but sagey-er green at some point in the near future.
I have not done the ceilings or trim, except for the playroom trim, and there are a few key things in the playroom that still need painting (ceiling beam, frame around top of brick wall, hole in ceiling, and one part of a wall). I want to replace the hallway hanging lights, the kitchen outlets and switches need replacing, the kitchen baseboard heater needs touching up, and the slider in the playroom needs trim. There are exposed wire ends in four places that either need fixtures or something to cover them (like a clock - working on that.) There are also wallboard patches that need to be done, but I cheated and covered them with painted paper for now to eliminate the eyesore effect, and they can wait.
Otherwise all of these rooms are DONE. It took me two months and a couple of bursts of serious hyperfocus. And some help from friends, though after they got me started I did pretty much everything else all by myself, including a skim-coat job in the living room that I am particularly proud of.
Now I need a break. There is more to do, but I'd say I'm about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through all the work that needs to be done in our house. I've done the most significant prep/painting jobs, and the major common areas of the house are now beautiful enough for me to relax in.
Thanks so much for all of the encouragement along the way, and good luck to those of you who are facing similar challenges.
