Prehistory unit study resources...

Thread Starter
I'd like to start our History off next year with a short unit study on Prehistory. Maybe a month spent on this? I have the Usborne Internet Linked Encyclopedia to use as a spine, but am looking for other resources to flesh the study out. Blogs, websites, purchased materials, whatever! Thanks

My dd is SUPER into prehistoric stuff and just read When bugs were big, plants were strange, and tetrapods walked the Earth- we got it and the sequal off Amazon. I also got her a dinosaur book by National Geographic and we did some of the lapbook stuff from homeschoolshare.com on dinosaurs-some of it.

Also had to add there is a Magic school bus book on Dinosaurs I liked too.

I've heard good things about the cartoon history books by Jacqui Bailey and Matthew Lilly.

Awesome timeline at http://www.charliesplayhouse.com/
They also list evolution resources there.

Usborne Internet Linked Prehistoric World would work well for you. I'm using it as a spine for my year-long prehistory curriculum.

movies:
How the Earth was Made
Before the Dinosaurs: Walking with Monsters
Walking with Dinosaurs
Allosaurus
Walking with Cavemen

We spent all summer learning about prehistory. Feel free to take a look through our activities:

You could check out the Mosaic history document. Their 'part one' is both prehistory and ancient history (you could stop when you got to your preferred stopping place.)

Weeks 1-5 are prehistory, week 6 is "What is history? And the First Civilization", and then weeks 7,8 and beyond dive into Mesopotamia, Egypt....

So that could fit your month-long unit spec.

I like their approach.

Alright! I needed some more prehistoric references. Our science curriculum's dinosaur resource was pretty lame, so I'll be supplementing. I have materials for my 8 year old, but I still need books more on my 5 year old's level.

My 8 year old ds is into dinosaurs. He loves to spout facts, so for Christmas I got him Visual Factfinder: Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Life. It's written with a two page spread per subject, with facts written in bullet form. He uses the index to find the dinosaurs that interest him. (Although he did sit down last night and read in order from the beginning.)

The groupon for our area just had a deal on tickets to Dinosaurworld. We'll take a trip there in a few weeks. That always sparks their interest!

kinda off topic but when we studied about dinosaurs our librarian suggested this cute book

dinotrux by chris gall: its about what the world would have been like if dinotrux existed (1/2 dino 1/2 vehicles) it a super cute giggly kid book. The boys loved it. Not exactly historical in nature but just a fun book to throw in the mix.
