Talk to me about teeth - how young, how do you tell, etc?

I have a 3 week old babe. On his lower gums, in the front, i swear i can see 2 teeth just under the gum. is that normal and you can always see baby teeth that close to the surface? or is it possible that my 3 week old is getting teeth?

(i read that babies can be born with a couple of teeth, so i assume its possible that DS is getting teeth....i just don't know how to tell for sure)

I think I read the buds can be visible early on. He may not actually be cutting them.

It is possible. . .I have heard of some babes getting teeth that early (some are even born with teeth, eek!). But it could also be that what you are seeing is just his gum structure.

Teeth cutting is so variable. My guy got his first at 5months. But he was drooling for ages before hand. The gum got swollen a few days before they actually broke through and the day before they broke I could see little points of white just beneath the surface. (That was the bottom two.) He got his top two a couple months later and he got these huge (or so it seemed) bumps on his upper gum line before they broke through.

My DD got her first 2 teeth at 3.5 months, she teethed, drooling, chewing on fingers from about 2 months. She was a horrible teether.

DS started teething at about 3 months, but was different in the fact he grabbed his mouth and cried, he never really drooled though. His first tooth was cut at 5.5 months. He has been a great teether, he barely complains and then BAM he's got a tooth.

Your babe could also have Epstein's pearls-they are really common and often look like emerging teeth.

I noticed the same tooth like white buds just under dd's gums at around 2 months and thought she was teething early but her first tooth is barely coming through now at 7 months.
