For Ds's delivery, with hospital midwives, there was no option presented to me. They just put the pit into my IV. I've heard since that if you don't have an IV that they will often give you a shot of pit without even asking first. So, if you don't want it you must make that really clear somehow. But keep in mind it is really hard to advocate for yourself at that point in time.

I will request a saline lock be put in to use for pitocin after the birth. I would much rather have an IV than an intramuscular injection. I have a couple risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage, so I am fine with a managed third stage.

Can I ask why you would rather have the IV than the intramuscular injection? I am finding this thread interesting as I am trying to figure out where I stand on the pitocin.
