help! my boob is killing me!!!

ok, so i've had clogged ducts many times before and this time feels different. the whole areola hurts when ds nurses, it feels like it's being pulled on really hard. in the past i could feel a sensitive area inside the breast and sometimes it would be red on the outside that i would massage and put compresses on, but i don't even know what to do this time. i tried putting a compress on top of the nipple/areola, but it didn't seem to help. anyone experienced this? i'd really like to avoid having to take antibiotics. TIA

Hmmm. Not sure. Are you saying you know/believe it is a clogged duct? Or thinking it might be something else?

Anyway you have some little cuts on your nipple? Is your babe latching well? Trying a new position that is putting unusual strain on your breast? Are you feeling engorged on that side?

not feeling engorgement and ds is almost 3, so no problems latching on . it does seem to feel beter if he's in a different position and only really hurts when he first starts nursing. just don't know what it could be

Hi. I'm a breastfeeding counselor. Maybe I can help...

Do you think you have a plugged duct now or are you just experiencing the sore areola? Could it be from a bad latch? Have you been pumping at all? Sometimes a badly fitting horn or suction on too high can bruise areolas.

I know I've given myself some soreness from hand expressing too roughly trying to work out the the plugged duct. Just a thought...

It doesn't sound like mastitis, but these would be signs:

Do your breasts feel hot?
Do you have any red streaks?
Fever?

Hope this helps!

let's see-i've never used a pump; don't have any of the signs of mastitis. i've had mastitis/clogged ducts before, so i am familiar with these feelings. that's what's throwing me off so much.

If it feels like a bad latch but the latch looks fine.... You said it is with the initial latch on that is what sounded familiar to me..... Sounds like something i have had in the past and a midwife whipped up a batch of jack newmans breastfeeding cream/ointment..... That stuff will cure nearly everything quickly.
You can google for the ration/recipe.
I would bet it would do the trick.

It could be a sign of pregnancy, or ovulation (especially if you've recently gotten your cycle back).
