Homebirthing Twins

I scrolled back through a little and couldn't find any threads on this topic. We very unexpectedly discovered our 2nd set of twins at a 21 week u/s this past Mon!!! They will make babies 9&10 for our family. Our 1st set made #4&5. My first set I delivered completely naturally in a hospital after 3 previous hospital births with our older 3. After our twins we transitioned to homebirthing and never looked back. Of the 3 single children that followed our 1st set of twins one of those was an unassisted birth. I apprenticed as a midwife for 7 years before marriage and my husband is a paramedic so we were very comfortable with it and both of us have attended many births...never twins though. We were very close to going unassisted this pregnancy but decided against it at 12 wks....which I am now very grateful for! We now have an absolutely wonderful midwife we are in love with.

But my question is this. Has anyone on here homebirthed twins or is expecting twins planning to home birth? Just curious for those that already have delivered them at home what the experience was like...how long between babies, if you had a waterbirth if you had to move from the water to a dry place for the 2nd baby for monitoring, if transition occured twice, if you were in the water how the 2nd baby was monitored, etc. My 1st set were born only 5 minutes apart but I also know it can be as long as 2 hrs between babies. A was born vertex and B breech.

I have an appt next week to talk details with my midwife and the changes in the birth that this means. Dh and myself along with my midwife are all very much at peace with continuing on as planned with a home water birth. Just some changes to the birth itself that will be made...such as the number of people on hand, as there will now be 2 other midwives present and 2 more assistants for charting and fetching things, another u/s at probably around 36 wks to check positions and so on. I went all 40 wks with my 1st set so fully anticipate going all 40, or close to it, this time around too.

So, any twin home birth stories on here?

I hadn't thought of looking over there. I was on that board for our previous 2 pregnancies and births. I just found at least 3 amazing stories on the Birth Stories board. Thank you!!

My twin homebirth was great, I'd highly recommend it. Check my story out at:

And the Parenting Multiples board here has lots of positive homebirth stories too!

Best wishes!

Mothering magazine featured a twins HB last fall I think? I would check their backlog as well. FWIW, we thought I may have been carrying twins and were planning a HB there as well...but it seems like we're just getting one--darn!

Sure! Although I haven't had twins at home, I know several people personally who have, one of whom is a fellow midwife in VA. She was an intern at Casa de Nacemiento in El Paso when I was there. Her twins are about 6 or 7 now, I think. You can probably email her and she will tell you about it..her name is Lori and the practice is http://www.marshallmidwiferybirthcen..._midwives.html
Hope that helps you. Most all the midwives here will do homebirths. We try to have one midwife for each baby and one for the mom, as well as assistants for each. That's how it's usually done, however I do know people who have UC'd twins. Best of luck on your upcoming blessings! And congrats on your large family! That rocks!

I had my twins at home 6 years ago at 39 weeks. The first baby was born in my room while I stood up and help onto the bed and the second baby was born almost 7 hours later in the dining room while I was on all fours in a pool with 2 inches of water in it (long story!) PM me if you'd like the whole story. They were good births other than a little long in between ;-) Congrats on your second set! That seems very exciting.
