For a couple months now, 15 month old DD (ec since birth) has really not wanted to poop in the potty. Sometimes, she acts like she's trying, but it doesn't work, and then she wants up. The same thing happens on her toilet as her little squatty potty. She's peeing in the potty a lot and letting us know about misses as soon as they happen by walking into the bathroom or taking off her wet diaper and handing it to us.
It's obvious when she poops, but if we catch her doing it, she'll stop on the toilet and wait until we're done and then continue later. She can get it all out in 1-2 poops/day, but when we keep trying to catch them, it's often drawn out to 4-6 poops in a single day, and I only have 6 covers in her size. I find myself doing what I don't want to do and just telling her to go ahead and poop in her diaper and tell me when she's done because I don't want to change 6 poopy diapers and clean her up 6 times in a day (which she hates). Her diapers are loose enough, and she generally lets me know before she smooshes it in, so it's not a horrible mess, but it still hits the cover at least half the time.
In the past 2 months, she has pooped in the potty twice. Once was when I was wearing her for an extended period of time during a party, and I only let her down to go potty, and she pooped one small piece and then refused to continue but later pooped in her diaper when I was not wearing her. The second time was when she had pooped in her diaper a lot already and then continued pooping some really soft poop in the toilet. I'm just trying to figure out what is going on so I can figure out how to help her. Here are my theories:
1. She needs this control in her life, so she is deciding to do all her pooping in her diapers, and I just need to wait it out, and she'll decide to poop on the potty again later when she's secure in her own control over her own body.
2. She is more comfortable pooping in other positions. She seems to want to do a really deep squat, and the potties are too high off the ground for her to get the position she needs, and I need to experiment with ways to get her that positioning (in which case I need ideas).
3. She is constipated and is having a hard time getting the poop out and has the most success if she's got maximum freedom of movement to try different positions (like having a baby). In this case, I'd need to see about what I could do with her diet to make her less constipated and certainly not continue offering the potty when I think she's going to refuse and continue to hold it, because that could make her more constipated.
4. She doesn't have the patience to stay on the potty long enough to get it out. Sometimes, she'll sit for a couple stories or to play with something, but soon, she'll throw whatever she's holding and then want to go get it. If I hand it back, she'll throw it again until I let her up. She just doesn't want to be on the potty anymore, and I can't tell if she's really done and ready to get up or if she's just tired of waiting for the poop to come, in which case I need to be more creative about ways to get her to stay there. She's just now really getting interested in books, but her attention span is still very limited.
