Would you do it???

My partner & I are considering getting rid of our 11-year-old car with 140,000 miles on it rather than paying for a bunch of repairs that would be required in order to maintain it.

Neither of us uses the car to commute to work, so the car gets used just a couple of times a week for errands, shopping, etc. This time of year we use it less because we bike everywhere, but in the winter we get a lot of snow, so we use the car more. We have one daughter (20 months old) who is currently cared for in our home by us or by her nanny, but next spring we're hoping to start her at a Montessori school. We're not within walking distance of our grocery co-op or the preschool that DD will attend. We do have decent bus service in our city, great bike paths, and we belong to a local Community Car organization, although there's not a Community Car within walking distance of our house. We have neighbors & nearby friends with cars that we could probably borrow from time to time, and we already rent a car when we have a long trip to make.

Has anyone gone carless and regretted it? Anyone gone carless and wished they'd done it sooner? What is the key to making life work without a car?

Any insights or BTDT stories would be so appreciated.
