It's official - we're homeschooling next year!

I can't even tell you the flutters I get writing that! I'm both nervous & excited. We're moving from two years of Waldorf Kindy to HS - not quite sure what style yet, but probably some mix of crafty, season-oriented, unit- study, child-led, make-it-up-as-we-go. I'm scared & sad to leave our beautiful & loving Waldorf home, but know that this is the right financial & academic choice for our family. I'm anxious about making this very 'counter-culture' choice - we live in an extremely education focused city populated by mostly two income families with children in all-day school/childcare. I'm really excited (& nervous) about the openness & freedom homeschooling gives us!

Anyway, any thoughts or advice to share for that first year? What do you wish you had known?

Oh, and look around-- I was a librarian in Boston for a while. . . there are more homeschoolers than you might think. The libraries there were my first introduction to "real" homeschooling families.

I live in California's Silicon Valley where I thought everyone worked full time and sent their children to school, day care and afterschool activities all day. I was shocked to find such a big homeschool community here, and so diverse too!

Start at the library, definitely. Check the internet too. You'll find others!

Congrats and enjoy the amazing journey! I don't have any advice, everyone will have different homeschooling styles, but I do know that it has changed our lives in hundreds of positive ways. (And I never planned to homeschool until the week I decided to start, lol.)
