Possible Colic?

Thread Starter
My seven week old has been doing the same thing every night at about the same time (about 9 to 11 or 12). She cries, thrashes around, seems to want to nurse but cries after about 30 seconds (and I have low milk supply, so I can't tell if she's crying because of no milk or too much milk, because she is full...I don't have as much milk at night and give her a bottle of breast milk). She isn't content being rocked, swaddling, etc.

I'm not sure whether it's colic or if she's fighting sleep. Any advice?

My kids had colic and I will tell you how it was for me, they would scream like they were in pain from about 5 to about 11 every night. There was nothing to do (although I tried everything repeatedly as I can't stand hearing my baby's cry and would sometimes just cry right along with them)

This explains how to tell if it is colic. When you offer the bottle will she take it? I would rule out crying because she is hungry and then try the normal things like checking diaper, bath is she likes them, rocking, swaddling. She may just be over tired that is very common in babies. They have a hard time winding down.

Good luck it is so frustrating to have a crying baby and nothing you are doing seems to be helping. Do you have a sling or wrap? Some babies really like to be warn next to mama as well.

Ditto everything Katie said. All 4 of mine have had colic and each one had a different pattern. My newest can cry any time of day; evening is typically the worst but it can start as early as 10am and usually goes no later than midnight. I know a lot of people are against crying it out but I've found that sometimes he just needs to scream for 5 or 10 minutes and then he quickly calms and often times poops. Otherwise sometimes he needs burped firmly on the back (I know everyone says to have gentle motions but mine like to be burped hard-not too hard, just solid and fyi-my pediatrician agreed). Sometimes he likes squished in the sling, sometimes swaddled in the sling, recently he's gone back to wanting to sleep-nurse, sometimes he likes it outside, sometimes he likes held & walk or bounced but NOTHING ever works every time. Sometimes I have to put him down and walk away. It can be tiring and he's literally given me a headache some days from the screaming in my ear. I, too, have also just sometimes cried along.

Hang in there!

Try to get your hands on "The Happiest Baby on the Block," either the book or the DVD. In the book (haven't watch the DVD, but have heard rave reviews), the doctor explains what colic isn't (pain generally) and what colic is, and also what to do to help alleviate it. My daughter isn't colicky, but early on we started using his methods anyway, and they are amazingly successful. Now she has her "witching hour" (1-2 hours in the evening where she's fussier than usual) and we still employ the techniques from the book.
