PL - DS only pees/poops standing up??

DS is 17 months, and we've been toying with potty learning for a few months. I've taught him the sign & a word for pee & poop, and he uses those words & signs when I'm peeing or pooping, but not for himself yet. Not sure if he gets it, but I'm trying. He'll also use the signs/words when he sees his potty, and will sit on it when I use those words, too.

We had great success a few months ago when he signed & said potty while nursing, we undressed him (dry diaper), and took him to the potty, and while he didn't pee in the potty, he stood up and peed right next to it.

I've read Diaper Free before Three, but am disappointed that she doesn't discuss potty learning for cloth-diapered babies more. DS already feels the sensation of pee, in his cloth diaper, so using underwear doesn't help with that.

So, here's my question: DS ONLY pees/poops standing up, whether wearing a diaper, or underpants, or diaper-free. If I see him peeing/pooping and try and take him to the potty he gets upset and resists. If I know he's about to go, and take him, he'll sit, but he holds it till I let him up, then goes off on his own and poops, standing.

How can I get him to use the potty if he only stands??

Well, you are lucky the child is a boy. He CAN pee standing up; not ideal, but reasonable. Go get a good stool, have DH stand on it and pee into the regular potty. Make a big deal about it, etc. We potty learned between about 17 months and 20 months this way. Now, I'm still standing behind him and holding/aiming his penis, but at least we are out of diapers.

Now pooping was a bit tricky on this route. For about 2 months after he was daytime diaper free around 2 (except for naps), he would wait to hold his BM until nap time when he had a diaper on. So, I got a potty seat and watched him very closely naked while I delayed nap time a bit. I just waited until he couldn't hold it anymore and then gently, but quickly, rushed him to the potty and half sat him down AS IT CAME OUT. Then huge praise of "wow, that is YOUR poop." Only took two times before he was on board and would sit which we would reward by endlessly reading his favorite books.

Just wanted to say I have a similar problem, 16mo DS freaks out if you try to sit him on the potty... We have tried a few things but honestly I just haven't had the energy to try much else so we kind of gave up, which is too bad because he will tell me when he needs to go and is quite fascinated with the potty & anything potty-related. I may give it another try soon if I can work up some energy/motivation!

We use a large dog's water bowl as a toddler-friendly urinal. ds hasn't had a pee accident in I don't know how long, Pooping is more complicated--he's tried to aim at a receptacle while standing but it didn't work that well. Currently he tells me before he poops, goes into the bathroom or another private, carpet and floor clutter free area, and then tells me when he's done so I can wipe and clean up the pile. Not ideal, but still easier for both of us than changing a diaper and cleaning a poopy butt.

I've heard of using newspaper to poop on for easy cleanup as well.

Wow, I'm glad to hear this is semi-common. My friends and family pretty much thought DS was a weirdo! LOL! These are great tips! Thanks!
