why are my diapers leaking?

So I've never posted here before...we've EC'd my daughter since birth so I've never worried too much if our diapers leaked. She's two now and mostly out of diapers, but I put a diaper on at night maybe 50% of the time, depending on what else is going on and how tired I am. We use Fuzzi Bunz medium pocket diapers with a microfleece insert doubled up with a folded flat fold. She only pees in them maybe half the time, but when she does they ALWAYS leak. I just stripped them and I wash with soap nuts. The insert and flat fold are wet in the morning, but not completely soaked, so I don't think she needs more absorbency (although maybe I'll try a prefold instead tonight to test that theory?). But when I say leak, I mean leak all over the place--like practically a puddle on the bed. Last night my mom babysat and I think she snapped the diaper too loosely, so that could have been the problem, but really it happens most of the time if she pees at night. So I was hoping maybe you mamas could suggest some problems I haven't thought of. Thoughts?

Pockets sometimes don't work at night b/c the diaper, when stuffed thick, can gap away from their legs as they move in their sleep, and the pee just runs out. To check this, put the diaper on and then have the baby sit Indian style and see if the diaper stands away from their crotch. A better solution would be a diaper with adjustable leg openings (FuzziBunz one-size) or fitteds with a cover.

We always had that issue with pocket diapers for DD. It was like she peed too fast for the pee to go through the microfiber and be absorbed by the insert. (They were stripped and washed correctly and all that, not repelling.) We tried a bunch of different kinds of pockets and I'm not kidding, every single one puddled.

When she was bigger we got Sandy's Mother-ease size large with the Mother-ease covers for over night and they worked so well!

We've been doing EC with DD2 and it's so much easier, I'm so glad I tried it. She wears a prefold with no cover most of the time.

Ah! Never thought about the leg opening problem...I think that's it, thanks! DD has skinny little thighs so that makes sense. And we have one FB with adjustable openings, and it has never leaked, but I thought it was just better because it was newer or something. Hmm. Maybe I should sell my FB's so I can replace them with one-sizes...

If your little is skinny legged, you're just asking for leaks. You have to make sure that the leg openings are snug every time. We have this problem a lot and in fact can't use many brands of dipes for this exact reason.

Our night-time dipe is Happy Hempys pocket fitted with a separate cover. That way if anything gets out of the dipe, the cover catches it.
