Dear Mothering Dot Community,
You helped and supported me last night and you didn't even know it!
Went for a rare night out w/ old work friends and was really enjoying myself when the topic of breastfeeding came up. "Are you still breastfeeding?" they wanted to know. (DS is 10 mos old). When I replied in the affirmative, most of the girls were kinda surprised, and not in a good way. I heard a few stories about mothers who "just sat right down and nursed in the childrens' section of Borders." Oh, the horror!!! And lots of stories about toddlers who "just walked right up and ASKED to nurse." Wow, can you imagine that?!?! Then one gal actually said to me that she thinks it is weird to still nurse when the baby gets to be 8, 9, 10 mos old. Again, my baby is 10 mos. and a super-nurser. Um... okaaaayyy. I calmly explained why I still nurse, the benefits, etc. I didn't even get a chance to delve into it too much because then the subject of CIO came up and how CIO is just not for our family.
You should've seen their faces when I told them DS co-sleeps with us! Then the tirade against co-sleeping and pro-CIO began.
A few months ago I truly might've burst into tears, and actually did so a few months ago when my MIL freaked at our co-sleeping. BUT... I sat there and truly thought of all you wonderful ladies here on Mothering who were so positive and supportive when I reached out over MIL. I once again tried to calmly and peacefully explain why co-sleeping is so great. I'm afraid it fell on deaf ears, but that's okay. I consider it a victory that I was able to "defend" (not sure if that is the best word) our family's decisions and be able to just shrug it off.
So many, many thanks! I really do love these boards!
