makeup for daughter

Thread Starter
she's 10 - too young, imo, but she wants to at least play with it for dress-up.

Anyway, I have 3 girls, 10, 6 & 1 - and I would like to get some good quality non-chemical eye shadow, blush and lip gloss. I don't wear makeup, and I don't even know where to start looking! Whole Foods? Body Shop? Internet? I recently read about all the chemicals that women put on their skin, and makeup was #1, so I'd like to start my children out safe as possible.

I'm allergic to most lipstick, chapstick and Burts Bees lip pencils, and dd6 might be allergic to lipstick, too. I also have eye sensitivities and have not found any eye pencils I can wear - but I admit I haven't really looked!

We homeschool, and she doesn't have a lot of peer pressure yet, but I can see it coming. She recently asked about plucking her eyebrows, and I said no way.

thannks

I make my own lip balm with beeswax and a mixture of grapeseed and coconut oil and honey. You can find lots of recipes online. I reuse old lip balm tubes for myself and buy new tubes at Jo-Ann's for giving away.

I've bought KT Naturals for natural make-up. I really like her minerals eyeshadows. With a good brush, you can line your eyes with shadow. I find it less irritating than a pencil.

I don't wear make-up everyday, and the smallest eyeshadow pot has lasted me a couple of years.

How about mineral makeup for the powder stuff? For the lip gloss I'd think any natural brand would work, especially if you can get a tinted one it would be liked I bet. Or I've heard you can mix in some eyeshadow/blush powder to regular gloss to give it colour (could use some of the mineral stuff for this maybe?).

Here's one tutorial for how to do this (not using natural products, but may be helpful anyway):

I let my kids wear Burt's Bees Pomegranate lip balm - it has a very natural and sheer pink/berry tint to it.

For us, I wouldn't even consider eye make up for quite a while. It takes skill to put eye make up on and you really don't want that stuff in your eye.

I'd let her use a mineral make up powder, maybe a natural pinkish blush and a sheer tinted lip balm for now and as she's older and more mature, I'd add in eye make up. Whole foods does have some nice, natural eye pencils and mascara.

They are young, but I think its fun to let them dress up in makeup but I reccommend looking up some home-made makeups you can do at home so you dont need to worry about additives, it can make a good project for the girls and it's cheap! Natural makeups are expensive, and when their that age, its just for play they dont need the good stuff yet.

I would reccomend Aromaleigh mineral makeup. Thier mineral powder eyeshadow/liners come in TONS of colors, so I bet your girls would have a fun time picking out which ones they like! They sell samples of everything {I think the eyeshadow powders are $1 each}, which actually last a super loooong time and would probably be plenty for your girls to use if they're just putting on make up for fun. I believe they also have lip products and blush, too {and alot of the eyeshadows can double as lip color or blush}.

If you want to steer them away from the "wearing makeup to cover up flaws/look prettier" mindset, I would make it more like an art project--painting on your face! That is how I think of makeup--I don't feel like I *need* it to look pretty, but being an artist, I love putting on my makeup becuase it is so fun! It *really* is great painting/drawing practice, and great for fine motor skills, especially using mineral makeup with a brush! I find it easiest to use a medium sized brush like this one on the left {ecotools eyeshadow brush--they sell them at most walgreen's or walmart's} http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H54QOvCOVt...0/DSC01878.JPG
That kind works better for me than the tiny slanted ones, which I find kind of hard to control.

To mix up the mineral powder, I use either water {just get the brush wet} or aloe vera goop from a piece of my aloe plant {or you could probably use the stuff that comes in bottles too--as long as its 100% just aloe juice}. I find that the aloe juice makes the shadow stick longer than just water, and it makes it a little easier to control where you're painting it.

I have VERY sensitive skin to most makeup, and mineral makeup from Aromaleigh has never bothered me {its all natural stuff--none of the bad ingredients some drugstore mineral makeup companies add to thiers}. Plus, I am all about using as natural of stuff on my body as possible, because of how much stuff you can absorb through your skin!
HTH! <3 Have fun!! I can't wait until I have little girls to play dress-up and make up with...

Welll...talk about bad timing! Shortly after I posted this, Aromaleigh went out of business because of some online drama I guess
However, just wanted to update that I have found a new mineral makeup company--Orglamix, on etsy! Beautiful eyeshadows and great customer service!!
