HELP! Need GC/Dairy Free/SUGAR Free SNACKs please!

Thread Starter
Two weeks ago, my beloved and I went to a new-to-use Holistic Practitioner. After finding some pretty serious issues in both of us...she put husband on a Gluten-Free/Dairy-Free/Sugar-Free eating plan.

Husband is handling this much better than I am! I have purchased an SCD bookbook AND both of the Vegan Lunchbox cookbooks. We are NOT vegan...but I need help!

The biggest for ME is snacking. I'm a grazer...where husband is a meal-eater.

As for teh SUGAR-FREE...it's pretty serious. NOTHING but Molasses. And 1 TBsp of Honey per day for him. Little less strict (but not much) for me.

I would LOVE to admit that I'm a great "veggie tray" girl...but without dips...well, that's a LIE!

Any ideas? Recipes? Favorite blogs/sites/books?

Thank you!

Hummus, baba ganoush, guacamole, and any mayo based dips make great additions to your veggie tray.

Hard cooked eggs and meat roll-ups are also common snacks around here - just take a slice of meat, add some mayo or mustard if you like, add a veg or pickle, roll and eat.

We make dairy free/gluten free pizza (www.buckwheatpete.com, pita recipe is the crust, and this is the ricotta (though I put in chickpeas, and caramelized onion, garlic, and green pepper too). Then we top it with ham or bacon and black olives, and mushrooms. Yum (we had it last night). I always make a little too much of the "ricotta" and then use it as dip with rice crackers.

We use guacamole on a lot of things. We also make gluten free bread (my recipe has a little sweetener in it, I think honey but might be maple syrup, I'm sure you could swap it out).

You can use rice pasta in place of regular pasta. There's still plenty of snack foods out there (rice cakes with peanut butter or avocadoes on top, potato chips (my vice), curried chickpeas are a quick warm snack.

My DS can't have cane sugar, and DD2 can't have beet sugar, so we've done a lot with no sweeteners. And we're more than dairy and gluten free, but we've been doing it for over 2 years now and still finding new things to try. List all the things you CAN have and start figuring out a plan. It always looks a little brighter that way.

Help for gf,df and sugar free snacks

Hi Mrs. Bernstein,
I can totally sympathize. 4 years ago I had to go off gluten, dairy, eggs, soy and yeast. Since then I have developed gluten free sourdough bread and pancake recipes that taste great, have a long shelf life and are substantial and satisfying.

You can download my free recipes for the starter and pancake recipe:
http://www.sanctuary-healing.com/food-recipes.html

My sourdough baking method is different than what we're used to but once it's mastered it's easy.

I will make a batch of pancakes, 4-8 at a time, store them in the fridge and toast them up for snacks with nut butter, jam, even sardines! Sometimes before work, I'll toast one up, put it in a container, take it to work and eat it at 4 pm. It still retains its moisture after all those hours. The sourdough technique is a natural preservative.

This diet a big change but it gets easier with time and the good news is you will probably be giving your health a huge boost.

good luck, you can do it!

Dairy free ranch dip:

2/3 cup raw unsalted cashews
1 cup cold water
2 tsps onion powder (it is important to use powder, not fresh onion for the characteristic ranch flavor)
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp apple cider vinegar

blend in a blender until smooth and creamy, add 1 teaspoon dried parsley or a little fresh, and stir to combine.

Michelle - that looks AWESOME! ty!

If you can still eat soy, there are loads of soy-alternative dairy free items out there. Also almond, cashew, bean flour, and rice are all alternatives to wheat and dairy. No sugar is harder, in some ways, but still not so bad - egg is harder! Keep to the low/no processed foods, and learn to do a few things yourselves - like making fig bars for snacks. Eat raw whenever you can, and be ok w/having easy snacks like popcorn with a bit of salt or yeast on it. Yummy and easy! Hummus and guac are our dips of choice, though my ds, who is dairy free (lol) loves ranch, which other people have introduced to him and now he craves. Arg. I am going to try the ranch dip above! YAY!

Good luck!

I make coconut milk yogurt with minimal sweetener (just enough to feed the yogurt starter) and then make it into dill dip for veggies. You can also do viniagrette for veggies.

Smoothies are a good snack

Chips and salsa

I make french fries for a snack.

peanut butter (natural, no sugar) on rice cakes or celery

fruit

Andy- Yeah, someone did the same with K. She got hooked on the stuff, so I had to work fast to find a good substitute, because, hello? She was eating vegetables. I think it's a really good fake, and really very healthy.

Apples or rice cakes with almond butter/other nut butters
Can you do dried fruit like raisins, banana chips, etc?

For snacks I like to make sure I'm getting some protein-- seems to tide me over better. If you can do nuts, a handful makes a good snack.

Lara bars are great, but they are pretty sweet-- sweetened with dates not sugar though-- might work depending on what you can eat.

Also thinkthin bars I believe are dairy free, gluten free and sugar free-- they do have a lot of ingredients and are pretty processed but might be good in a crunch.

A bowl of oatmeal w/almond milk and raisins/fruit of your choice, nuts, etc.

HTH,
Lynn
