Up until week 33 of my pregnancy, I was reluctantly planning a hospital birth - I had major misgivings about whether I would be able to have a natural birth in a hospital given their c-section/intervention rate. But I was also afraid of doing a home birth because I had large uterine fibroids (largest 9 x 6 cm) and I tested positive for GBS in my urine early in the pregnancy. Ultimately, the hospital protocols and my "medically inclined" midwives reaction to my birth plan turned me off so much that I switched to a homebirth midwife at week 34.
I had a healthy baby boy at home at 40 weeks and 3 days and am so glad I decided to make the change to the provider and location that was right for me. If you are undecided about homebirth, I urge you to interview experienced homebirth midwives in your area. When I finally met my homebirth midwife, who has caught over 1,000 babies, I just knew she was the right provider for me and I finally felt at peace - for the first time in my pregnancy! My labor was long and not-so-pretty at times (TRANSITION!) but I would not do it any other way :-) And the best part is my healthy, beautiful son who I brought into the world in the best and most peaceful way I could. Yay!
