Taking toddlers to movies

My older dd (8) wants to see Toy Story 3. My baby girl is only 18 months. Their dad usually takes the 8-year-old to movies these days, but he is swamped with work and just isn't going to be able to.

The 8-year-old is my high needs child, and the toddler seems pretty quiet and serene, although maybe she just seems that way because I compare her to the older one. Anyway, she's reasonable quiet and not terribly active, however of course she is 18 months old.

Do you think an 18-month-old can handle sitting through a movie? If you are in a similar situation, particularly if you're a single mom or your husband is deployed or your partner can't take the child to a movie for whatever reason, how do you handle this kind of thing?

I've never actualy taken a toddler to a movie since my older dd was so high needs and wouldn't have been able to handle it. Someone somewhere must go to movies with toddlers. Please tell me your experiences.

Some movie theaters have free family movie days (I know regal cinemas do) So maybe you could take them both to a free movie and just see how she does. If she won't sit through it then you can just leave the movie without wasting your money. If she does ok, then I would take her to see Toy Story.

I've taken my kids to the movies since they were both infants, but usually to our theater's "parent movie mornings" where they leave the lights on dimly, allow strollers, and reduce the volume.

However, I just saw Toy Story 3 yesterday and would caution that some scenes are VERY intense and might be too disturbing for an 18mo. My 5yo loves the Toy Story franchise (we are watching TS2 on DVD right now for the millionth time!) and I kept looking at him to make sure he wasn't scared at TS3. It's a great movie but if my son was 3 or younger, I don't think he could have handled it.

Just my $.02.
