Sick of all the pregnancy eating DON'T'S!!! Please help! - Page 3

I need to stop reading these threads. I'm well past the pukey stages, but every time I read the suggestion to put lunchmeat in the microwave I want to hurl. Rubbery, steamy, nastiness! Blehhhhhhhhhh.....

Well, if it were me I'd have the bag open before our car pulled out of its parking space.

Eat! Queso is too good to be ignored.

I am loving this thread, it is really putting my mind at ease

Oh goodness, the mere mention of queso has sent my taste buds into nostalgic hyperdrive. I grew up in Texas, where queso is king, and now live in San Francisco, where everyone's idea of queso (if they've even heard of it) is the crap they get on nachos at the ballpark...it's a damn shame.

I can't think of any reason why queso wouldn't be safe. To be honest, some restaurants might use a Velveeta-type product in it (which you may want to avoid for reasons other than food safety), but if they have any self-respect then it's just a roux, cream, and a blend of monterey jack and cheddar cheeses.

I know what you mean. I, too, am from Texas and even here in New York good queso is hard to come by. I had one place, but they closed! I'm still upset about that one.

I love to cook, so I suppose I could try making it myself, but it's just not the same.

I will admit that my options here are better than when I lived in England for the better half of a decade. Every time I came back to visit the first place I would insist on going was to my favorite Mexican restaurant. Like, straight from the airport insist.

I really don't worry about it at all. My motto is that if it's not safe for pregnant women, it's not safe for anyone... and if it's safe for everyone else, it's safe for me.

We get raw milk, cheese, and cream which we use to make ice cream and butter. I think this from our known source is actually safer than pasteurized.

But I've also enjoyed a couple Jimmy Johns which really hit the spot. And even some horrible regular hot dogs (which I don't think are good for anyone at anytime). And I will happily order blue cheese dressing in a restaurant. Really, I think there is too much hysteria over these issues in the US, and not enough focus on just plain eating whole, nutritious foods during pregnancy.

Although, as my children have outgrown food sensitivities during this pg and I can finally eat whatever I want again, I'm finding I have little self-control, and even slipped back into eating some fast food hamburgers and fries. ACK!

I'm trying to get us back on track with a whole-foods diet.

Here is another food question I have... is bacon safe? I normally don't eat bacon or pork at all, but I have a huge craving for a BLT!!! I want to buy some tomatoes from the farm down the road but am scared for some reason- maybe b/c of the risk of toxo from farm veggies maybe?? And I don't know if bacon is safe...

Anyone here eat BLT's while PG??

I'm Jewish and I've made more BLT's than I can count since finding out I was pregnant. Also, bacon with pancakes so that I can smother it in maple syrup.

I spent hours in bed with my kidney infection dreaming of when I could eat "real" food again. Bacon was on the top of my list. The girls in my DDC were eating it for me so that I could live vicariously through them.

Eat the bacon. You won't regret it.

Sorry about your kidney infection! Hope it's all better!

I'm one of the mellow ones. I'm not more cautious during pregnancy than I am the rest of the time. I'm just not going to get hysterical about stuff. I have better things to worry about.

i have been eating bacon this past week. Not good because of the nitrates, but I only had a few slices

You can get tested for toxo, it was in my blood tests, but then again I do have a cat so maybe that is why they did it.

No problem. Like I said before, there are many things I worry about but food isn't one of them.

And thanks. My kidneys are now working as they should and I'm able to eat all the yummy things I wish. Right after I got the all-clear I headed straight to a place that serves only Belgian fries and ordered poutine. In case you're unaware of the perfection that is poutine, it was this: twice-fried Belgian fries topped with fresh cheddar cheese curds and chicken gravy. Then I hit the topping bar and added raw onions. Heaven.

I gave myself a week to indulge in the occasional "bad" thing before I started back in with the whole eating "healthy" deal. But by no means does that mean I'm giving up ice cream. Or sushi. Or bacon. Or cheese. Or - never mind.

Moderation is what I'm suggesting. It's a little "do as I say, not as I do."

Me too. I'm not going to read any recommendations for pregnant women and it's been 3 years since my last pregnancy and I don't remember food recommendations from then.

I know a lot of people are all "who cares" and "everything in moderation" and I wish I could have that attitude but i swear i am ALWAYS the 0.00004% of something. For example:

I always win contests...literally like all the time when I enter I almost always win

I lost my first baby after 2 perfect ultrasounds, and I am young (don't do drugs, drink, etc. etc.) I was told twice that there is no way i'd lose the baby since it was so healthy, I was already 12 weeks along, everything looked great. etc.

Then I give birth to ds who is born with a CHD ...only a 7 in 1000 chance of that happening (kind of high since it is the number one birth defect BUT STILL). I don't take seizure medication and I didn't have poor nutrition.

I guess my point is, I AM scared of tiny risks of things because i feel like I ALWAYS end up in that TINY percentage!!! Anyone have any advice for me? Because honestly I have a lot of anxiety about it all this time around!!

I've got horrible, horrible luck too. I've been sick my entire life, had an awful childhood, catch anything I come into contact with, back in my dating days I was a jerk magnet, and so many more things so trust me when I say these things:

You didn't cause yourself to lose your first baby and you didn't cause your son to have a heart defect. Both of these things were, quite simply, just plain bad luck.

Think about all the good things in your life: your wonderful son, this pregnancy, your DH who you love so much, etc..

A roast beef sandwich or a salad with blue cheese dressing aren't going to hurt you OR your baby. I promise.
