Training for a marathon...

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me...
My husband has just started training for a marathon... is in decent shape and a great runner but we are not the healthiest eaters...
He wants to make sure he is getting nutrients to help support his new endeavor but without a bunch of pills and powders that are not natural
Any suggestions?
Thanks for any help you can offer

Try runnersworld.com for some eating strategies. I find that their recipes are good, and their general approach to nutrition is pretty healthy.

Not that I'm the best person to answer, but I do some pretty long rowing and have changed my diet dramatically. I find I need more protein than I used to, and try to get some in within a few hours of a long workout. My favorite easy ones are hard boiled eggs and/or greek yogurt. I'm also pretty addicted to a post workout coconut water. Natural gatorade!

For meals I'd look for good carbs / protein - quinoa is great! I top mine with canned sardines, vinegar and spring onions. Good protein food to keep you fueled up!

But there are times my body just demands a burger. I always give in.

I think the first step would be to eliminate simple carbs. Make hummus and quinoa. There are a million recipes out there. I also do coconut water for electrolyte replacement. There are a few energy bars that I like. The Perfect Foods Bar (my favorite pre-race food) and the Amazing Grass Energy Bar. I don't eat many bars since most of them have soy in them, but these two are great. Still processed, of course, but I think they are a good energy supplement.
