Please help me identify these mixed breed dogs (link to pictures)

Okay, we have 2 new dogs. Both are unknown mixed breed. The black one we just got yesterday from the shelter and I completely disagree with what the kennel tag said, so I would like to hear other people's guesses. The mostly tan dog we got a few months ago off craigslist and we are not sure about it either. The dogs are both a yr old (estimated) with the tan dog being closer to 2 yr old. The tan one weighs 50 lbs, the black one is probably 30-35 lbs. They are both male.

Hopefully these links will work:

Please give me your best guesses, and then I will share what I think -and what they were each labeled as when we got them.

I so wish I had the money for those doggy DNA tests to find out the breeds.

Thanks for any guesses.

I want to say Shepherd mix for the black one and for some reason I'm thinking Sharpei mixed with something else on the tan one.

I have a shepherd/collie mix that looks EXACTLY like your black on....except my mix has the long shaggy hair of the collie. And she's 60lbs, much bigger than your cute mutt. But body shape, face shape and color all look exactly like your black one there.

The other...I dunno. I can't be much help with that one.

1st dog: Maybe border collie/shepherd/lab?
2nd dog: Boxer/sharpei?

The black one looks like a border collie/german shepherd mix (though he looks a bit small to just be a mix of those two, maybe something smaller in there as well?). Almost definitely a shepherd mix, I'm just not sure what he's mixed with.

The second one reminds me a lot of a "Puggle" (Pug/Beagle mix), with something else mixed in (maybe one parent was a puggle?)

Two very beautiful dogs, whatever they are!

Black one looks like a german shepherd mix. The tan one looks like a pug, pit bull mix.

My brother has a dog that looks a LOT like the black one, only he's huge (about 135 pounds in good condition) - he's GSD/Rottweiler.

Thanks for all the input.

The shelter had the black one listed as a shepherd/chow mix. I agree he is some kind of shepherd mix, but I don't really see any chow in him. He is underweight, but also has a small frame, so I was definitely thinking shepherd and something smaller, maybe border collie. DH was hesitant to even look at him because he saw the word chow on the door tag. He (the black dog with no name) is sooo sweet. When we took him out to an observation pen to interact with him, he picked up a brush in his mouth and brought it right over to my 2 yr old DD and then just stood there letting her try to brush him. We were looking for a young dog with a mellow temperament and so far he's great. His leash skills, however, are non-existent. He freaked out both times he was leashed at the shelter jumping everywhere and I ended up carrying him to the car. I'll try again once he's had a few more days to get used to us. He is very mellow when he's off leash. I need to stock up on tasty dog treats for bribes as we get him used to the leash.

The tan one was listed on Craigslist as a puggle. DH saw a puggle in a movie and had decided he wanted one. He is a little bit overweight at 50 lbs, but I still think even if he lost weight he's too big to be a true puggle. He has a very solid wide chest. Maybe a pug/hound cross of some kind? But now that a couple of you said Sharpei mix, I could see that too.....

Maybe someday I'll scrounge up enough money to have a doggy DNA test. I'd still be interested to hear any other guesses. Nobody thinks the thin black one looks like a chow right? (Not that it matters now, I guess. I have nothing against chows, DH just didn't think they were a good breed with kids for some reason.)

I don't see chow at all in the black dog - and I loved your story about the brush! With some patience (and treats) to get him compfrtable on a leash, he sounds like a great dog.

The other one is far too big to be a puggle! A big beagle would be 30 pounds, and a pug is 14 to 18 pounds. He might be a little on the heavy side, but certainly not 20 - 30 pounds overweight!

for the tan one, something about the eyes reminds me of a friend's dog which is a Vizsla

The tan one looks to me like he's got some rottweiler in him, based on the ears and the shape of the head and nose. Very similar to our rottie. Same big curled tail too. I would think rottie/lab mix, but our rottie is a big girl so unless it was a small lab (most yellow labs aren't) I can't see that. Very gorgeous dog though.

The darker one, I was thinking shep/lab mix. He's got the scruffy long hair of a shepherd and some of the sharper features. I'm not seeing chow at all, they have stocky, blunt features.

Either way, cute doggies.

I'd say Shepherd mix for the black one- maybe Shepherd/golden? I don't see Chow either.

The tan one, I was thinking he does look very puggle-ish, but way too big, maybe puggle/lab? or lab/pit?

As far as DNA tests- don't waste your money. They're highly inaccurate. I've heard of people testing their purebreds just for fun, and getting back mixes that didn't even include their actual breed, or were even ancestrally close. Like the Champion Dachshund labeled as a husky mix for instance. Other times they suggest things that are crazy and highly improbable- for instance, there are VERY few Tibetan Mastiffs in the country, its highly unlikely that there are too many mixes of them, or that those mixes are being picked up as strays etc. Yet I've seen people swear their dog was part Tibetan Mastiff because a DNA test told them so.

Shepherd mix for the black one. Very hard to say with what though. I see a lot of Ger Shep in him.

I see no Sharpei in the tan one except for the straighter back leg. Head is very rottie shaped. There could be some sort of hound and boxer or pit bull in there. Cute dog!

I see pit in the beige one.
Cute dogs.

I was thinking maybe Shepherd/Husky for the first one?

Second is def puggle somewhere but maybe Boxer or Pitt mixed in.
