breastfeeding until 8 y.o....????? - Page 2

DS just turned 4 and he's going strong. (It helps keep the weight off, so I'm not complaining! ) I feel strongly about child-led weaning. Sometimes I have little moments of wondering if he'll be asking for a drink of "leite" (that's what we call it; DH is Brazilian and he wants DS to be able to speak his language) before he goes off to prom. But if that's what's best for DS, that's fine with me. He'll stop when he's ready, and in the meantime, I love every minute we get to spend together. Every minute that doesn't involve picking up his toys, anyway.

There are worse things going on in the world than a girl whose interest in breasfeeding has gone too long for YOUR comfort, you know?

That's how I feel about it.

In a lot of "poor" countries breastfeeding goes on until around this age because it's free nourishment. Just because it's in a richer country shouldn't make it weirder.

When you do something that most of society finds very strange if not out-and-out wrong, and allow an interviewer to film you and and post it on the Internet, you're going to be pointed at.

I am 100% pro-breastfeeding. Really. I talk about it whenever the opportunity arises. I stick up for breastfeeding mamas when my co-workers make snide comments about NIP. I boycott Nestle. Whatever. But I think the woman and her daughters are unhealthily fixated on her breasts. I know it was just a short video, but I find it very odd that these girls think their mother's breasts "belong to them" and get upset when she wears a bra. I think it's weird that these girls have pet names for her breasts at their age and "love to" draw pictures of them. Aren't there a million other things in the world to draw pictures of?

I feel sorry for those girls. Not because they were breastfed so long, but because their parents advertised it to the whole world. How many of their friends and acquaintances saw that video? Classmates? Hello???? Offering your kids up as targets for ridicule is the opposite of nurturing behavior, no matter how long they get to suckle from you.

ITA with this. I wondered if the kids were developmentally delayed actually.
