Tooth extraction care for an 8yo?

DS had two teeth extracted today and needs a third extracted next week- because the adult teeth were coming in but the baby teeth weren't falling out on their own, and there was concern that the adult teeth would come in crooked if we waited a few months for the teeth to fall out on their own.

The dentist gave me a whole bunch of clean gauze pads so I can keep changing them as needed, the extracted teeth for the tooth fairy, a few toys for DS, and a prescription for 7 days of antibiotics.

If I give DS the abx as prescribed, then he'll take them for 7 days, have 2 days off, then take them for another 7 days after the next tooth is extracted. That does NOT sound like a good idea for growing a healthy boy!

My plan is to hang onto the abx prescription, but only fill it if he shows signs of infection, rather than using it propholactically as the dentist wants.

What are natural ways to prevent infection? What are signs that an infection is developing and that he needs the abx?

I've decided to hold off on the antibiotics for now. The dentist's instructions say to have him rinse with salt water a few times a day, starting today. But he also told DS not to eat small foods such as rice, but that's not written on the instructions he gave me, and I'm not sure when I can give that to him, or if he would be OK with oatmeal, or really what I can feed him other than ice cream or chicken broth!

After the bleeding stops, have your ds use his tongue to feel for a dent in his gums. When he stops feeling a space for food to get wedged in, then rice and such'll be fine. Really, small bits of food will get in there anyway, it's just more uncomfortable and difficult to get things like rice back out.
