Need to Worry?

My almost 14-month-old son has just started to take steps (not "walking" by any means and cannot stand up without holding on to things). He also does not use words or even approximations of words, although he is a vocal babbler. He does not mimic sounds or gestures, but he does make good eye contact.

I stay at home with him and try to give him good, focused attention but if this is his developmental state, maybe I'm doing something wrong? Or he needs another environment?

When should I worry about his lagging development? Should I worry now?

Have you addressed your concerns with his pediatrician? That would be my first step. He may be on the late normal end of meeting milestones, or he may need a little help from physical and/or occupational therapy.

His ped says if he's not saying a few words by month 15, it's time to worry. I guess that seems kind of arbitrary and he seems just so far away from talking. Over the past four months, his babbling has increased in frequency, but not variety.

If you are in the U.S., check with your state's or county's Early Intervention program and see if you can get an evaluation scheduled.

Can't hurt to get it checked out by experts, and most Peds are not clued into developmental stuff until babies are older. But if there is an issue, the earlier it's addressed the better. GL mama!
