My DS (5 mo) has taken a real interest in our beverages. Not ready to start solids but thinking maybe getting some sort of cup for him to "play" with would be good. Do you use glass? stainless? which tops did you like? Thank you!

When we are in restaurants, I started holding the glass to DS's mouth (I always drink ice water with lemon). At first (around 5-6 months) he just liked the feel of cold glass on his gums. Around 6 - 6.5 months I started tipping the glass more to see how he liked a little bit of water. he did well, so that is what we do when we are out.
At home, I put a little water in a sippy for him to play with/practice. He hasn't "got" it yet.
The kiddie cups at restaraunts are a great toy/distraction!

I've always used sippy cups. I give a little water in a sippy cup occasionally when they start eating solids, but I don't know if I've given anything earlier than that. I don't remember with #1, but I very well might have since she wasn't interested in solids until around 12 months. Anyway, if I did it would have been water in a sippy cup. My little one started having solids at 6 months, and started having a little bit of water in a sippy cup occasionally at the same time. I used plastic with #1, but I didn't know about BPAs and all that. I use a stainless steel bottle with a sippy cup top with #2.

my lo is 5 months and loves to hold my pint glass of water up to her lips and lick at the water! I always hold the bottom of the glass with her - but I'm considering buying her a wooden cup I saw in Joyful Child the montessori products catalogue. hopefully someone will chime in with product suggestions!! I'm open to glass too, but would like it to be shatterproof!

we got a doidy cup from amazon. still haven't made my mind up whether it's "all that" or no, but it was inexpensive, lightweight, and bpa free and colorful (and not MIC).. she really knows it's hers, too. i imagine the crazy spilling when learning to use it would happen no matter what, though.
if i had the $$, though, i would get from Nova naturals (and they probably have them elsewhere) a very tiny tiny wooden cup that only holds a mite of milk or water. That might be fun to try..i think it's called the wee wooden mug.

We initially used a small steel cup with a rim (for sips of water, from the time she started solids basically) but she never drank much out of it. I'd have to hold it for her and she hated that, she always wants to do everything by herself.
I recently bought her a sippy cup (she's 12 mo right now) and she does much better with that. She likes to hold it by herself, cart the cup around with her, etc., and that would never work with an open cup.
We have a stainless steel sippy cup that was a gift but it's too bulky and complicated. The one I bought is a little plastic one with handles and a closable spout. It works really well.

well it seems as though i mightbe the odd one out.lol.
my lo gets a bottle somtimes with water in it. maybe a little juice so she can learn to suck it. it is easier from a bottle than a sippy. first time she ever had a bottle. when she goes to the ymca daycare i will put bm in it. sucking from a sippy takes more force than a bottle. so once she gets the action right i can give her a sippy. so i wont have to worry about spills.
also i let her drink out of my cup. and little cups with no lids. i really like to have all the options i guess. a real cup and a sippy cup. i have tried to drink oput of a sippy and you have to really suck on most of them to get anything, so i figure a bottle would be easier to start with. she chews on it too. at least she isnt chewing on me, and i can put cold liquid in it. the only teething thing she likes. she knows the difference between me and it.
i didnt start this until recently at 8 mo old.

I like sippy cups especially with valves for when we are out, particularly in the car. Learning Curve makes ones with the valve built into the spout. Super easy to clean. My La Leche League leader likes the Avent hard plastic spout because it does not encourge biting. I always had trouble with leaks on Avent sippies. I do use and like open cups at home in the high chair so I can control the amount and thus the mess. My DD refused all bottles but liked cups and actually started with the ones with the straw. She is also a one girl disaster so with her it is all about containment. At this point, the baby will take just about anything but since I am not having luck with pumping all I am giving him is water in a sippy. It's more for the entertainment in the car.

I don't understand the sippy cup animosity personally. I think they are great.
My kid figured out how to drink out of a straw at about 8 months so we bought him a straw cup. I think its a Nuby Cup. We also have a few valve-type sippys. He can drink perfectly fine out of a regular cup too, but he loves to dump the water out and throw the cup on the floor instead. We do Baby Led Weaning so I like him to have as much independence as possible while eating. The sippy cups are great for allowing him to portion out the water for himself and they don't leak or explode when he throws them on the floor.
I am not a fan of glass because of his throwing behaviors. I don't let him drink out of glass open cups anymore either because he likes to clench on to them with his teeth. Yikes!
We also have a Sigg bottle that he uses sometimes, but it irks me that when he throws it on the floor it dents

for sippy cups we liked the nuby at first since it was soft, closer to 10-12 months we liked our kleen kanteen sippy and thermos foogo.
as for cups - have you seen the doidy cup?

DS1 started with a foogo sippy cup ~ 9 or so months. Sometime around 1.5-2ish we switched to fogoo straw cups & around 2.5 we got 4 tupperware cups & 2 sippy lids which are his cups at home now (we still have the straw cups for when we go out and want something leakproof for the car
.
DS2 is 10 months and I haven't gotten around to consistently giving him a cup yet... I need to start that
I love the foogo cups cause' their leakproof if you want them to be or you can not put the valve in and have them just be a standard spout-type cup. And I love the fogoo/thermos brand in general cause: a - there stainless-steel inside w/ plastic #5 lids/valves/etc b - you can buy replacement parts from thermos' customer support when parts get lost/gross/destroyed (DS1 has chewed through a couple of the straws and spouts - and a few more have just gotten gross from milk/juice/whatever).
Good luck!!

I gave DD1 sippy cups with valves so that she can just bring it everywhere, keep it in bed, etc...she's used them from the start.
I carry a sport water bottle everywhere because I can't stand not having water, even if I'm just going to the grocery store!
So, I still always give her one and it's definitely better for us to use the valve ones so that there is no problem with spills.
At dinner, she uses a regular glass.
With DD2, I'm going to give her the same kind of sippy cups. She hasn't actually started drinking anything yet but I guess she'll have water soon.
Right now she still likes to hold my cold glass and put her face on it when there is condensation.
