I gave it to the cops and it had pot in it. Arrests were made but I don't know anything beyond that.

BBQ could be any kind of meat with BBQ sauce. I guess you could have BBQ rabbit even. I always make my sauce and it's a sweet molasses sauce. I've never seen BBQ referring to only pork before, interesting. We would just call that pulled pork.

Around here that is all you may call barbecue or you run the risk of bodly injury or at least some evil glares. Anything else is was it is (ribs, brisket, etc). The only exception I can think of is grilled chicken with barbecue sauce which you could safely call barbecue chicken.

Also, while I said earlier that it could be a backyard gathering involving grilling, that term isn't really used as frequently here as "cookout" is, at least not by natives. I would say "Come over to my house on Saturday. We're having a cookout." A lot of people from other parts of the country move to my area though, so both are commonly used.

To us BBQ is anything cooked outdoors on the grill (hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, ribs, etc.)

Or even things cooked indoors that have BBQ sauce on them like chicken wings.

I am not sure that anyone around here uses the term BBQ all that often. I say barbeque chicken or barbeque ribs if we are going to have them cooked (grilled or in the oven) with barbeque sauce. When I was a kid we had "BBQ Day" at school but that was sloppy joes. We just call pulled pork, pulled pork, or maybe shredded pork... and a pig on a spit is a pig roast. And honestly no one seems to serve pulled pork that often anyway. Mostly we invite people over to "grill out" and we have brats or burgers.

Oh yeah, and edited to add that any time I have ever had pulled pork it was made in a crock pot.

We say cookout here, too.

Nothing is more disappointing that being offered "barbecue chicken" and getting baked chicken with barbecue sauce. LOL

I live in northeast GA, and we have a unique sort of barbecue sauce--half sweet, half vinegary. Sort of a blend of eastern NC and south GA styles. It's really good.

We also usually eat Brunswick stew with our barbecue. Around here, that is more of a hash style. Like, I make a big pot, then run it through the meat grinder, sort of hash. It's something my family adores (even my kids), but if you're not from here, most people find it gross.

When I hear BBQ I think of tomato based BBQ sauce! When we moved to NC I ordered BBQ and got that vinegar stuff, and was grossed out!

Here BBQ never really refers to a sandwhich unless it has some sort of bbq sauce on/in it. sandwhiches with pulled pork are called pulled pork sandwhiches. other meats with red sauce are sloppy joes or taverns. unless it is brisket then we call them brisket sandwhiches.

BBQ refers to anything cooked on the grill with a zippy, sweet and a tangy sauce or seasoning on it. You put bbq sauce on something from the oven or crockpot but it is not the same.

Me too & for me it generally includes some sort of dry rub &/or sauce. Grilling is not synonymous with barbecue & neither is smoking. Low & slow over your heat is a real key.
