Around here that is all you may call barbecue or you run the risk of bodly injury or at least some evil glares.

Anything else is was it is (ribs, brisket, etc). The only exception I can think of is grilled chicken with barbecue sauce which you could safely call barbecue chicken.
Also, while I said earlier that it could be a backyard gathering involving grilling, that term isn't really used as frequently here as "cookout" is, at least not by natives. I would say "Come over to my house on Saturday. We're having a cookout." A lot of people from other parts of the country move to my area though, so both are commonly used.
