I just made one of these for my DD tonight using the above instructions and it was soooo easy and turned out adorable! Total cost including fabric and thread: Less than $10. Even better, it's ALL straight seams!

So cute!

But I'm scared of shirring.

I was too, but seriously it's SO. easy. You just wind the elastic thread on the bobbin by hand, load it, and sew. I didn't change the foot or the tension or anything on my machine--just left it all at it's standard setting. It's as easy as sewing straight seams. Once you've done a few, you have to stretch the fabric gently as you go because it gathers more and more with each 'shir', and that's it.

Thanks! I will be making some of those....

Where did you find your elastic thread?

I think if you had a video tutorial you would understand it a lot easier. Sometimes it is hard to understand things when it is all in words.

I found it at my local Wal-Mart near the notions (NOT by the regular thread).

As for a video tutorial:

How to Shir Fabric

I didn't even bother to change my stitch length or tension like she recommends and it worked fine (at least with the lightweight cotton fabric I used). I used my presser foot as a guide for the stitching.

Thanks for the video -- that does make it less scary. I'll have to pick up some elastic thread and fiddle around with it.

o great another thing Im adding to my sewing project list! I was just looking at skirts today with the shirring at the waist thinking how simple they would be if I could get over the whole shirring....well I think I might have to pick up some elastic thread.

Adorable! TFS- I can't wait to make some for my 3 dd this summer!

I made one today! It didn't turn out quite right. It is kind of tight and doesn't stretch much. It fits my dd ok, but I'm going to try again. What kind of fabric did you use?

ahhhh was just coming to this forum to ask some shirring questions, and this looks like a great thread for it. So, I'm working on making a top for myself thats.. pretty much just like that dress except its a shirt. Going for a very "flowy" shirt to go over a skirt. Anyway. I measured my chest and doubled for the circumference. Then put 5-6 lines of shirring in, then stopped to see how it looked. And I just thought.. no friggin way is that going to gather up enough to fit me. So I snipped out some of the fabric so that its just 1.5x my chest circumference. Then of course, this tutorial says to double the chest circumference too! Argh. Do I just need to have more faith that it will gather sufficiently?

That is so cute. I would love to learn to sew. I don't even own a machine right now.

You could do shirring on double the fabric and then measure and see where you are.
