non plastic cups with spouts for babe?

Does anyone know of any websites that sell cups for babe that are not plastic? We are very concientious about not having plastic toys in our house, but we have been allowing dd to have advent sippy cups. I was hoping to find a sippy cup that is not made from plastic. I know that greenbaby sells a spill proof PVC free cup, but I was hoping for some nonplastic alternatives.

any ideas?

Thanks!

you can go to any goodwill, thrift store, etc and find mix and match pieces, for generally 25 cents or so. Small jelly jars, juice glasses, pottery pieces etc.

HTHs

I don't think you'll find anything non plastic that has a sippy spout

Exactly what i was looking for too. I tried a stainless steel small coffee mug with a lid that had the hole for drinking coffee. i closed that up with a pure beeswax candle drpping the wax over it until it was sealed and that left the tiny air hole at the other side of the lid to slowly flow water out. But it was still too much water for my baby who is 11 months and a bit hard to hold for him. i don't know if he could do a sippy either yet.
I have an article from delicious living ( the free mag at health food stores) and it lists which plastics are safest- they are : #2 , #4, and #5)
most UNSAFE: #3, 6, and 7.
I don't know what to do. What i wonder is what did babies do say 100 years ago before sippy cups to stay well hydrated? just learn to drink from a cup?

You are rad for not having plastic toys. How i wish we did that. What kind of toys (wooden I'm sure) do you have and HOW did you afford it???

My kids never used sippy cups. It worked pretty well after a few whoops. I just poured a sip at a time into small glasses for them.

Now, at 19 mos +, they're using SIGG bottles for sports and in the car.

BusyMommy- what's the coating inside a SIGG bottle? I se they have kids SIGG bottles, too.

I haven't found any non-plastic sippy cups. We are trying to rid the house of them, especially the gerber ones as I found out those aren't as safe. We have some old #2 playtex ones, the newer ones are 5s. If you can still find the old, opaque plastic type ones, instead of the newer colored plastic ones those are the #2's which are the safest option if you do resort to sippys.

I have heard mixed things on #5- I read an older article that said 5-7 was bad but a newer one that said 5 is ok, 7 is still bad but 1-2 are the best option besides not using plastic at all.

What is an SIGG bottle? and i am wondering if my 11 month old would be able to go without a sippy in the 105 degree plus that we live in without becoming dehydrated................... how old were yours when you gave them water in a glass, Busymom?
I bought a #2 playtex cup yesterday and found out that a small ball/kerr? jelly jar witll fit the lid with a little bit of leakage but not bad- so i may just opt for that- I'll try just a sip or so in a glass also- but he chokes on the water whereas with the sippy he just sips it and does fine. That really should minimaize the time the water touches plastic, doncha think?
do tell what a sigg is too- thx! kk

We've never used sippy cups, either. Mostly b/c we don't have a dishwasher, and they take some intense sanitizing, IMO. I just hold the regular cup for DS#2 now. He's been drinking water since 10 mos. DS#1 didn't drink water until 1yo, so could hold the cup himself.

HTH!

My babe doesn't use a sippy cup either. I started giving her expressed breast milk in a little glass when she was 5 1/2 months old about once a day just to get her used to it. Now at thirteen months she takes most of her fluids from a glass (she still does breastfeed but not a lot). I still hold the glass for her but also bought a little stainless steel condiment cup that I'll put a bit of water in for her to "drink" from. Usually she'll just play with it though.

I recommend just using a plain glass/cup. My dd started drinking from a cup at 5 months, mainly 'cuz I couldn't stop her! She just grabbed my glasses of water.. all the time!! She mastered it pretty quickly. Just start small: give a little bit of fluids at a time... they will get it.

On another note: Michelle at Green Tara Mama is offering stainless steel water bottles. She's offering them right now on her email list and ordering on Monday. They're $15ea with three caps!

Hmmmmm.

My water jugs are all #7 - polycarbonate - no dioxins, no leaching, it says on the bottle.
THey're light blue and VERY sturdy.

All the health food stores (whole foods, and others) sell them. So I think there is some mix-up in the article.
No- no mix-up in the article- it is true that #7 is bad- this is what the article says:
polycarbonate bottles are made with bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that when leached in sufficient quantties, has been shown to alter hormone function and chromosome alignment in mice and their reproductive cells (Current Biology, 2003, vol. 13) however the human health effects of this plastic have not been established. in fact, other studies, some funded by the plastics industry, have not found any health risks associated with BPA exposure.

that's what it says and lists it under the heading: USE THESE PLASTICS WITH CAUTION and lists #3, 6 and 7.
I know Nalgene bottles are made of this too. Now I reuse glass juice jars for carrying water. What about those BIG jars of Santa Cruz apple juice for water storage?
i will try just a cup with my little one and ditch the new #2 sippy. the suggestion about small sips in small cups has been very helpful. i think we can do this!!! thx for the inspiration that's why i love these boards- you not only don't think i'm nuts but you can relate and help out !!! thx......

hkrose- what kinds of toys do you have if no plastics- like my ds is really into dinosaurs and they are all plastic- etc., etc. help- would love to be plastic free but we have along way to go......
We do metal, cloth and (majority) wood toys. We ahve almost all the toys from www.JoMamaCo.com and then a bunch from different stores. There are wood dinosaurs out there, you just have to look. Unfortunately all of our sand toys are plastic. Right now it isn't in the budget to get some awesome wood and metal garden tools for dd and so it is a big concession I made.
