board games for toddlers?

Thread Starter
DD is going to be 3 this August, and is really getting into board games.

Right now we are playing The Hungry, Hungry Caterpillar and the Picnic game by Eeboo and she loves them both. I'd love to get more for her birthday in August, especially so we have them for winter!

Any recommendations?

DS liked Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders , and Sequence

You could make some too

Simple squares or spaces and dice to roll

A spinner with numbers or colors

A matching card game with printable pictures

Wow. Did your 3-year-olds really play Candy Land and Chutes & Ladders? Nate is only willing to play those games now, at almost 5-years-old! Well, he liked to "play" them before, but that basically involved playing by himself, moving pieces around randomly on the board, and bending or losing the cards for Candy Land.

LOL. yes, they really did. i'm surprised that's considered advanced board game playing at least they were ahead in something once in their lives

My current 4 yr old has liked Hi Ho Cherrio, Memory (more recently), and she loves Yahtzee! (we do the scoring for her). She also likes to "play" Blokus--this involves her playing by the rules, but we don't try to strategize against her--we do it more like a cooperative game. This particular child has no interest in Candyland or the Ladybug game.

One of my girls REALLY liked the Goodnight Moon game. I swear that game can literally put me to sleep!

Oh yeah, Puppy Racers was a big hit as well as the Elefun game. We didn't really play those with the kids though. Instead, they were games that they could do with their friends w/o assistance.

Well, Nate does like to do things his own way. And he doesn't like to be told how to do something, he prefers to figure it out on his own. Perhaps I shouldn't have used his game-playing as a comparison, but I honestly cannot remember back to what Nik liked. That was only 3-4 years ago, though, so I obviously need some help with my memory!

My son is 4.5 and games are still about his rules. He likes snails pace race as much as any of them. For a 3 year old Memory is good.

Trying to think what we played with my 3 year old niece last weekend...

She enjoyed Sequence, Zingo, and Hullabo.

My daughter loved logic games like Rush Hour Jr., Blokus, although we didn't know about Rush Hour until age 4, Rush Hour Jr was too easy by that time, but Rush Hour is a classic in our household now.

Ravensburger Snails Pace Race is cute and a cooperative game.

We got a Brown Bear, Brown Bear Eric Carle game at Target that has been quite fun.

I thought of another one that both of my boys loved. Ravensburger's Madeline Game

We are currently huge fans of Bunny Hop and Cariboo.

Haba makes awesome games for that age. Orchard was a big hit!

Another vote for Snails' Pace Race -- we're in to the cooperative games at our house, since I was traumatized by Candy Land and Sorry as a child. We've also found a lot of wonderful games at Family Pastimes, with Harvest Time being a favourite.

Crocodile Dentist. OMG - what a hoot - for kids and grown-ups alike. My teenaged cousins even love it!

DD is 3 and has enjoyed games for several months. Hi Ho Cherrio is good, two ways to play. Harvest Time is a similar idea but a cooperative game only, we love it. Brown Bear is okay, kind of too straight forward honestly. We also enjoy the games that come in High Five magazine; DD can play them by herself.
