Did you birth similarly as your mother? - Page 2

No. In fact it was disheartening for me to expect a labor like my mother's (8 hours). Mine was 41 hours. I was most similar to an aunt on my father's side -- long labors and horrible nausea and vomiting.

Nope.

My moms labor with me was 2 hours from the time her water broke. She was also a month early although she believes the doctor had my due date wrong. I was 7 lbs something.

My labor with my daughter was 20 hours from the time my water broke. She was 2 days early and 8 lbs 2 oz. I went to the hospital thinking I was going to have her with in a few hours! Hahahahaha boy was I wrong!

The only similarity we have is that we both manage pain well and had all natural birth experiences.

Yes, my pregnancies, labors and births have been very, very similar to my mom's.

My mom was late w/ me & had to have an emergency c-section. My DS was 8 days late, but no c-section here. I did menstrate at an early age, just like my mom.

For the most part, yes.

My mom went right around her due date for all 4 of us. We were all in the low 7lb range. All of her labors were about 4 hours long (from the start of active labor, maybe 6-8 hours total). My sister followed that pattern as well. Went on her due date exactly and had a 4-6 hour labor. I was induced a few days early, had a 22 hour labor, although the end was extremely fast and I'm assuming that my body would have naturally followed a more similar pattern to my mothers.

My moms labors started with her water breaking, and my water didn't break until right before DD was born, so that was different. We'll see with this birth how things go.

Thank you for sharing ladies, I find your stories so interesting!

Well, in the fact that my mom had manageable labor and births, with no drugs, yes. But her labors varied greatly in length and my brother and sister were very late (not really- more dating issues but they were 3 and 4 weeks late), I was born the day after my due date.

So my first labor was very typical, about 14 hours long from start to finish, arrived at the hospital at a 6, was completed by 7:30 and pushed for about an hour. My mom woke up in active labor and was sure the baby (me- her first) would come very quickly, she actually argued with my dad about taking her in, as he had a paper to turn in and wanted to do that first. Mom arrived complete and the OB nearly missed the catch! All within a few hours! My DD was 11 days past EDD, I was 1 day past EDD.

My second labor was much more like her first, I had spent the morning debating if I was really in labor or just having more braxton hicks. I was in the middle of the grocery store when I realized I had better go home, I was really in labor. That was about 4pm, by about 6pm we were back out to the hospital but contractions had never gotten regular or difficult. I arrived at 9cm, had two whopping contractions and the out popped DS! My mom's second was totally different, fearing a precipitous birth, her OB told her to come in right away. So she did, but she was only dilated to a like a 2, and so they had her walk the halls, etc. She ended up laboring for about 24 hours, and in says in retrospect she should have just gone home. They did break her water to hurry my brother along. My DS was born on his EDD, my brother was about a month (!!) late.

With her third, my mom woke up in the middle of the night and realized she was in labor. She spent several hours laboring on her own, not wanting to be in the hospital for 24 hrs. like she was with my brother, then had trouble waking my Dad who had been at a New Year's Party and they left about two hours later, once my uncle arrived to watch us. My sister was born a couple hours after they arrived, again no complications or problems. My sister was born about 3 weeks late, but again, it was dating issues. They both seemed to be about full term, the OB estimated them to both be about 40 weeks, not very post term babies.

I've got about 11 weeks to go on my third, so I'll let you know how this one compares!

Nope.

My moms labor started 2 weeks late with her water breaking. Both of mine began before my due date, and water did not break until pushing.

My mom's labor was about the same length as my first labor until the pushing phase, where she was sent for a c-section due to baby (me) being stuck.

Baby was determined to be stuck because she has a pelvis with a narrow arch. The doctor called it a Gothic Arch. Incidentally, I too have a narrow arch, but have pushed both of my babies (one the same size as my mom's babies, and one larger) with no issues at all. (Maybe the main difference there is she had an epidural, a posterior baby, and no freedom of motion for pushing. I had unmedicated births, and pushed however I wanted, and neither of my babies has been posterior--though one was asynclitic until midwife manually repositioned him for pushing--up until then he was not moving down.)

So, the only similarity between my labor/birth and my mothers is the length of labor it took to become fully dialated. Of course, my second labor was twice as long.

Not really. My mom went late with both of us. As in, she was 41-42w and they tried to induce her, and it didn't work She had quick intense labors.

My first, my water broke and I was induced at 38w.
My second was born at 40w1d. It was a pretty quick labor though. I think 5 hours total, IIrc, and by the time we realized it was real labor and went to the hospital (I was not trying to stay home as long as possible), he was born 30 minutes later. So that part is similar to my mom's births.

Not at all. 2 weeks late vs 1 week early, and my labour was 1/4 the length of hers.

Hi everyone, just wanted to say that, no matter what your answer to this question is, please take a moment to appreciate the blessing that you even *know* the answer to this question. I say this with all the warmth in the world that you guys are lucky enough to be able to talk to your moms about this and compare notes.

My mom died when I was 16, and as much as we did talk about in those 16 years, questions about what my birth was like (I'm an only) and how her pregnancy was were things I never ever even thought about before she died. And my dad's no use - he was there but doesn't remember a thing (he doesn't even remember whether I was born in the middle of the night or day!)

I loved reading all your answers and it's so interesting to compare these notes... just wanted to say this though because I know sometimes we take it for granted - it's AWESOME to be able to talk to your moms about this. I'm really psyched for all of you!

Does he at least know if she kept a baby book for you? Most of my info was in there so I didn't have to ask my mom for anything about me, just about my siblings. Having my children have the possibility of dealing with what you have is exactly why I keep baby books for all of them... my brothers father died when he was 8 months old and the only way he knows what his dad thought of him was through one entry in his baby book from him.

Yes... and like my grandmother.

All three of us had our first babies at approximately 43 weeks (42+5, 42+6, 43+2). Our first labours were very long (2 days, 3 days, 47 hours).

Our second babies were all 38 weekers (which still shocked me when it happened to me even though it had happened to them because I still expected to go to my due date after a 43 weeker lol). They were very fast active labours and pushing (both of them barely made it to the hospital... I was induced after prolonged ROM but then went from 4cm to baby in my arms in 15 minutes).

All of us have had lots of milk and breastfed for as long as we wanted to fairly easily.

We shall see what happens with this baby

Nope! Not even close! I birth like my grandmother!

Her first labor was around 6 hours, her second almost 2 hours.

My first was induced (pre-eclampsia) and 9 hours from Pitocen to birth. My second was about a half hour.

My mother was induced with me, it took 2 tries and 3 days before I was born. My brother came on his own, but labor was about 12 hours. She had an epidural with him though, so who knows what her labors would have been like if they were natural like my grandmas.

Not at all.

My brother & I were both quite early. Ds was full-term.
My Mom & Grandma both assured my labour was just like menstrual cramps but stronger - ah NO it's not!
Recovery was pretty quick for Mom but my recovery was long & rough.
None of us had real difficulties with bfing.

I suppose next time around it could be different for me.

so far im good like my mom in the no MS minority and i was joking with her today about folks birthing like they were born and she just laughed and said, well we better make sure someone is there on time to catch!
(i was born at home after a 2 hour labor and came "flying out" my dad barely got in the room in time to catch)

Not at all - my mom always went 2-3 weeks overdue, I went a week early. She had fast labors (2-6 hours), mine was 48 hours. The only thing that was the same was that we both had prodromal labor and walked around very dilated before going into labor.

Oh, and she had no morning sickness, and I get it BAD.

In some respects my labor were similar to my moms'. With my first baby, I labored for 24 hours, so did she. But, her first baby was a week late and mine was 5 days late. For my second baby, my labor was only 6 hours and my mom's was really short, too. Baby #2 was a few days late, and I think my mom's second baby was a little early.
Not really. She was w/ in 4 or 5 days of her EDD and so was I. However, her longest labor was 5 or 6 hrs and I was in labor for 14 with my first.

No idea, and sadly I will never know. My mom's water broke at 37 weeks with me, she immediately went into the hospital and got an epi and pit. I was born like 12-13 hours later. With my sister, my mom was induced at 39 weeks. It failed, they gave her drugs to put her to sleep, and the next morning they started pit. They did something called an LIA in place of an epidural, but it failed. Sis was born a few hours later.

I hope I labor like my grandma! She was like 12 hours with her first from start to finish, 7 with her second, and a grand total of 18 minutes with her last. With my uncle, her water broke, she went to the hospital with no pain. She just chilled for awhile and then all of a sudden her contractions started again. Uncle was born 18 minutes after the first contraction. I hope all my labors are like hers!
