Help with solids

Thread Starter
DD, 6 months, has been eating some solids for the past couple of weeks (we were gifted some Earth's Best baby food and tried it on a whim to discover she loved it).

Anyway, I guess I was anticipating a sort of hesitation around solid foods but we've seen the opposite. She FREAKS OUT in excitement when she sees that she's getting "grown up food" and lunges, grabs the spoon to feed herself, etc. Tonight she ate 4 oz of a "turkey dinner" (again, Earth's Best) and 2 oz of some carrots I cooked and pureed for her. This seems like a lot for a 6 month old?

I just don't know exactly where to go from here. She seems most interested in feeding herself, so maybe we should stop spoon feeding her. I always nurse her before solids (given generally once a day right now), so she's not filling up on that stuff before breast milk.

Any general thoughts? Any reason we shouldn't let her eat more solids since she loves them? FWIW, she's in good overall health and is 20lbs at 6 months, so a big baby.

I say follow her lead. I see no reason not to give her a spoon. If I load a spoon, DS will get it, and some of the food, to his mouth. Granted, it is a bit messy, but it is part of the learning curve.

for us (DS is 7 months) he likes either things he can suck off a spoon or a finger, or finger foods. He doesn't like a lot of either, just tastes. If he wanted more, I'd let him have more.

I don't see the need to stop spoon feeding her, but you could supplement with some easy finger food, like bananas, avocados, melons, etc.
