Have you used magnetic paint?

I want to make an area in dd and ds's rooms with magnetic paint. I've done a bit of research and found that the Rustoleum magnetic primer doesn't get very good reviews. There are other magnetic paints, but I can't find out much about them.

So, have you ever attempted to paint using magnetic paint? If so, what brand did you use? How many coats did you apply? How rough is the surface and how raised is it over the rest of the wall (if you did only part of a wall magnetic)? How well does it hold different types of magnets?

We are planning on starting to paint today or tomorrow, so I need to decide fast!

I haven't used it myself but having spoken to a few people who have I wouldn't use it straight on the wall. You don't get a completely smooth finish and it looks like it would be hard to paint over. I plan on using hardboard or thin plywood and painting on that then attaching it to the wall.

Again from what I've heard you need at least 2 coats, possibly 3.

I haven't heard of any problems with the magnets sticking. My nephews preschool have the plastic letter magnets which only have a small magnet on the back and they stick OK.

We did it on my pantry door. I think we used the rustoleum for the magnetic and then did the chalk board paint over it. I want to say it was 3 coats of each? It's on a door so the magnets don't seem to stick too well - because well it's a door. Wish we'd thought of that before hand and also maybe just done a flat surface. But I do like having the chalkboard to make lists for groceries, etc. And some lighter weight magnets do work well for holding recipes etc. up.

I saw a lot of magentic paint used for kids' room on HGTV. You could watch HGTV and get some ideas or go on their website. Just a suggestion.

I used the Rustoleum and it didn't work at all. I was pretty bummed/erked.

us too I wouldn't ever do the magnetic paint again. I liked the chalk paint but would just skip the magnetic primer.

How many coats did you use before giving up? I've heard of people using as many as TWELVE coats! lol

We painted dd's room already. I'm trying to decide whether we will use the magnetic paint on a board so we don't have to worry about removing it later, or just buy a big magnetic white board. The other brand of magnetic paint does get better reviews than the Rustoleum.

I wanted to do this for DD's room. My plan was to put a strip around the wall, paint over it, and then make big foam fish for her aquarium room that she could move around.

But after lots of research I couldn't find any that seemed to be worth the money.
