fever and bloody stools

Hi,
I've also posted this in the general H&H forum, but thought maybe it's an allergy problem. Could you please help me?
Hello, dear fellow Moms,
DD (9 months) is having a moderate fever for a few days now. She's quite lethargic when her fever is up but when we bring it down she's happy. We've been to the doctor and she put DD on antibiotics. Now she also has diarrhea and some blood in her poo. I think it's from the antibiotics, but the doctot says it cannot be. All the diarrhea coincides with starting the meds.
Please, could it be the meds? Since it's an antibiotic,I can't just stop giving it without replacing it with something.
TIA

Most antibiotics cause diarrhea- as a side effect, not as an allergy. I suppose really bad diarrhea might be bloody, but I don't usually see it. (I'm a pediatric nurse.) You might try adding a probiotic- Florastor is the most mainstream one- to help protect her intestinal flora while on the antibiotics.
Hope she feels better soon,
Lisa

Well I have to say that the only time that DD2 had blood in her poo (no diarrhea though) was when she was on Amoxicillan, and she turned out allergic to it (vomiting and a full body rash). The doctor put her on a different antibiotic.

Thank you,
Well, her poop seems to be better for the time being. We did add the probiotic and it made a HUGE difference. And she is getting better
And yes, it is amoxicillin that she is getting. Besides the blood in her poop there was no other obvious side effect.
