A friend of mine (very very mainstream) is having a baby and I do not think she would like or appriciate any natural stuff so I was thinking about buying her childrens books instead. What would you get?

I was thinking mabye some Beatrix Potter books or some classics like
Goodnight Moon
or Eric Carle books

What would you get a very main stream mama?

She is planning on Breastfeeding though so I thought some children books about nursing but afraid she and her husband would think they were weird.

Jamberry
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
a nice collection of nursery rhymes

I second a book of nursery rhymes. I got 3 copies of Goodnight Moon, so you might want to keep that in mind. Sandra Boyton's books are fun. There are also a bunch of books by Todd Parr. Some we have read.. "The OK Book", "The Peace Book" and "The Feelings Book". Have a look at his website and you will get a feel for what the books are about.

I think books are probably your best bet!!

I do have a book called "Mamma's Milk"... but even my DH who is pretty accepting of breastfeeding thinks it is a bit weird, and to be honest my DD doesn't like it.

Do you know if it's a girl? Blueberry Girl by Neil Gaiman is lovely.

I'm in the group who loves Love You Forever by Robert Munsch, but there are some who think its stalkerish and weird.

The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown/Clement Hurd

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

[I]Time for Bed[I] by Mem Fox

Pat the Bunny by Dorothy Kunhardt

More, More, More by Vera B. Williams

Anything by Barbara Reid - the Zoe books are great for babies (Zoe's Sunny Day etc.).

Sandra Boynton books are really cute. DS loves the Belly Button Book and Hippos go Berserk.

I almost always give books for baby showers. Some of my favorites: "Click Clack Moo Cows That Type,"
"Yummy Yucky,"
"The Way Back Home,"
"The Tin Forest,"
"Robots Everywhere,"
"The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear,"
"A is for Salad,"
"I Will Never, Not Ever, Eat a Tomato,"
"Duck and Goose,"
"Ish,"
"Lemons are Not Red," and
"On the Day You Were Born."

Good luck finding some books that your friend will enjoy!

More than any other books, we treasured and reread the Little Golden Books! So many have amazing classic illustrations, wonderfully written stories, and are small and inexpensive to collect. Here is their website and it looks like you can even personalize them now:

"I love you as much" - http://www.amazon.com/I-Love-You-As-...7311146&sr=8-1

One of my favorites because it depicts cosleeping at the end (but not in an in-your-face kind of way)

Along with some classic children's books (you have gotten GREAT suggestions for books on here!) I would think about also including a copy of The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease for the mommy to read and have on hand.

Ditto Jamberry. That was a dd favorite as a baby/toddler.

She also loved the books by Audrey/Don Wood: The Napping House, Piggies, Silly Sally, and all the rest. As a toddler, she especially loved the illustrations and we would read these over and over and over.

Are you wanting to get a really early baby book, or something for later?

I know we appreciated both. One good friend sent two board books ("Noisy Farm" and "Dear Zoo") and two older books (Click Clack Moo, Duck on a Bike).

Those two board books were my daughter's favorites when she first began being an active participant in the reading. They're both very, very simple and have flaps with pictures underneath. We'd read them over and over when she was 4-7 months old or so. My son liked them too. It was a little later that they started liking Margaret Wise Brown, Sandra Boynton, and things like that.

They also liked the other two books when they were a little older, especially duck on a bike because there's a lot of opportunity to make them active participants in that one. But I love Click Clack Moo.

Mommy, Where Are You? by Leonid Gore. This is a brilliant sleeper of a book so she probably won't have it and it's on sale for $6 right now.

Time for Bed, by Mem Fox

The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney - gorgeous picture book

You might consider asking your local children's librarian. S/he could point you toward some lesser known books that are sure to be wonderful.

Happy Baby Words was a huge hit around here, also all the affiliated books.

Giving books is a fantastic gift for every new mommy and baby! Great idea! Here are a few of our favorites:

Anything by Leslie Patricelli

I Love You As Big As the World
This would make an awesome read-on-the-day-you-were-born book

Little Pea

or

Little Hoot

Goodnight Gorilla

Read-Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young

Someone upthread mentioned Jim Trealease's Read Aloud Hanbook. That's a great suggestion. Good luck and enjoy selecting books!

We love these two. http://www.amazon.com/Big-Barn-Marga.../dp/0694006246 http://www.amazon.com/Everywhere-Bab.../dp/0152022260 One of the pages in Everywhere Babies say something like, everywhere babies are fed: by bottle, by breast, with cups and with spoons, with milk, cereal, with carrots and prunes. It has sweet pictures.

It depends on your sense of humor, but I liked "Baby Fix My Car" for a couple of friends (and my kids).
