Laundry detergent

Think dd is sensitive to Tide Free & Clear. Horrid diaper rash and some spots on body/face.
I need to find an alternative. Criteria are:
Easily available in Canada (supermarket, etc)
Fragrance free
Not expensive, as I'll have to use it for all the laundry (family of 6 makes lots of laundry!)
HE compatible

Thanks!

Nellies. Haven't seen it in the grocery stores, but I also haven't found anything in the supermarket that fits cloth diapering criteria. If you are in Ottawa or kitchener waterloo area you can buy it from the extraordinary baby shoppe, you can also order it online from them.

I use Seventh Generation Free & Clear. It might be a little pricier than Tide and the like though, I'm not sure.

I often use Sunlight Sensitive. It's petrol-based, and probably has phosphates, but it fits your criteria.

Purex also works - I think there's a plant-based fragrance-free...

Country Save is also supposed to be good, and economical.

ooh, I can use my Purex (I have the plant-based one)!!!

I am brand-new to CD'ing (started Monday, DS is 7 months so we are a little late on this train) and was wondering if I would need to switch over to a different detergent.

You could try Wonder Wash. It is not expensive and works extremely well, I've been using it on all of our stuff. I know that our one friend swears by it for her son because he reacts to almost everything else. However you would likely have to order it online through Wonder Wash (http://www.wonderwash.net/index_files/page0004.htm) or one of their retailers depending on where you are in Canada. I order mine from our cloth diaper company. Another good one is Rockin Green, but again, you'd likely have to order it online. Both are HE compatible (we have an HE washer).

We used soap nuts most of the time (order a bag of nuts online and they last forever) and sometimes used Purex (the unscented 'free' kind in the white bottle).
We're going to start buying a locally made soap, from GreenGals in Chilliwack. I'm not sure where in Canada you are.... but you could check craigslist and see if someone makes soap in your area. Cheaper, healthier, best for cloth diapers

I've used this one in a crunch when I needed to order more and had run out. It's good, I like it. We have bad allergies here and I use cloth diapers and this detergent seems to do OK.

I usually order mine through Amway or Watkins.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I know I can get Seventh Generation locally.
Sunlight Sensitive no longer comes in an HE formulation - it's what we used when my 5yo was in diapers, and I was really dissapointed when they stopped making it.
I'll have to look for the Purex - don't recall seeing the HE fragrance free variety in the store.
First step is to retry the Nature Clean, which I didn't think was getting the laundry clean, but then decided the Tide was doing just as well, and my baby just has poop that really stains and that I should be less lazy about treating stains in the general laundry!

Purex REALLY?? I always thought that was one of those cheap brands. I guess I should try that one day too.

Purex is cheap, that is why I like it!

I forget what site it was on (found through a link in another thread) but Purex seems to OK, or at least better, than some of the other major brands for use.

ETA: this is the site, I like the chart

Oh no! I didn't know that about SS. I guess it's been a while. As for the Purex - I don't know for sure that there's a fragrance-free version but I thought I'd seen one.

I'm going to try the Nature Clean at some point - I like trying different brands. I liked 7th Gen too.

Oh, and as an aside, if you can get it, Method makes a "baby" detergent that smells like marshmallows and didn't bring me up in a rash as some do. I don't usually buy scented varieties, but oooh I liked that one. I got it at SDM. Not for diapers... but for regular clothes...

Have you tried making your own? I've made my own detergent for years, it takes maybe 10 minutes for me to make 2 gallons, and it's extremely cheap (a few cents a load).

go to tipnut.com and type in "homemade laundry detergent" in the search engine there. 10 recipes...they all work.

Don't know which part of the country you're in but if it's AB or BC...COUNTRY SAVE, available from London Drugs!!! I absolutely love it!

Off the box:
Dye & fragrance free
Completely biodegradable
100% phosphate free
No optical brighteners or fillers
Gentle for sensitive skin
Low suds formula (so safe for HE washers)
Ultra-concentrated for low cost-per-wash ($6 for a box that does 80 loads)

And no, I don't work for CS or anything, I just started off using it for diapers only and quickly transitioned to using it for all our laundry.
