1 year old: Diet questions?

Thread Starter
DS just turned 1 year old. So far I have kept him from having the following foods as I know that they can be allergenic:

Wheat
Egg white
Humus
Corn
Citrus
Strawberries/raspberries
Tomatoes
Peanut & nut butter
Nut milks
Nuts
Cow milk

I have also heard that sometimes allergies can occur or be worse if certain things are avoided/delayed so any info on that would be great also. I am nervous to start him on these foods and am looking for advice on the best time and ways to do so. Also wondering if any of you avoid any of these things for health reasons (other than allergy reasons) and if so, why?

He also has had dry skin since he was born and I am not sure if it is eczema or not. Both my doctor and dermatologist said that 'it could be' so I am not sure what I should be looking out for diet wise in relation to that (I went of dairy and wheat/gluten for a while but saw no changes).

Also wondering when fish (non shellfish) and tuna are okay?

We did give him yogurt around 10 months and he had his first and only diaper rash & was up all night so we haven't tried it since. Any suggestions on this?

Thanks in advance for your help and time!!

It is probably safe to try any of these foods now if you don't have nut allergies in the family. Nuts are the one food of your list that I might wait on... Our DS is 3 and we still haven't introduced nuts or peanut butter but that is mostly because we've had so many problems with fructose that we don't want anything complicating our situation at the moment. Plus, we use sunbutter as peanut butter in everything and actually like it better.

I'd probably hold off on cow milk until last and I'd start out by using it in baked goods for a while. (I'd do the same with eggs, bake them in something first.) The proteins are usually altered in baking making them more tolerable and if I am remembering the paper I read correctly - it can actually help sensitive kids adjust. My DS is mildly lactose intolerant (as well as fructose intolerant) so he can't drink milk plain but he can tolerate small amounts of cheese.

Otherwise, I'd just go really slow and introduce one food at a time. I'd give it at least a week or two between foods if you're worried.
