too good to be true? Umbrella School

We unschool, and I've just learned that there are umbrella schools that are free, require only a birth certificate, vax records (or exemption), and quarterly attendance reports. Then I have no obligation to register with the state or do any other reporting (to the state or the "school").

Here's one in my state: http://www.freewebs.com/floridaunschoolers/

Can it be so easy? Is this totally legal and I don't have to worry about anything?

I looked through your link, and it sounds awesome. Sounds to me like it's a good thing!

I'm not so sure I'd label myself to the state as an "unschooler." Also, it looks like they have to report some stuff to the state, so either way, it seems the same. But, I don't know how difficult it is to homeschool in Florida.

We used FL Unschoolers and it was great. I formed my own private school as an umbrella school with the intention of having meet ups and things locally. When we left online school the state called and asked where the kids were going. I told them the name of the school and it is all kosher because the umbrella schools are registered as private schools.

We used Fl unschoolers until we left Fl. It really is that easy and you never have to report to anyone. Nance is awesome I've always thought it's a shame more Fl homeschoolers don't know about this option. The only downside is that the state considers you to be in private school,so you don't get counted as a homeschooler for the sake of state tallies. But that wasn't 't a concern for me, and I loved not having to do testing or evaluations!

ETA: although Nance doesn't charge a penny, I did go to her cafe press page each year and bought the kids Fl Unschooler t-shirts. It helps her to defray administrative costs.

Thanks, folks! You've reassured me. I'm actually going to use one a friend of mine has formed, but it is essentially the same and I wanted to double check the legality!
