at home insemination questions

so...dh and I have been ttc for almost two years and along with that I'm dealing with some vaginal pain issues. We are able to have sex but not as frequently as I think might up our chances so we are going to add some home inseminations this month just to cover more bases.

in terms of ovulation and semen quality: my pre and post O blood work looks good and dh's semen analysis came back looking good as did his hormone blood work. I have not had a laparoscopy or an hsg yet so those things haven't been ruled out but it is general consensus that stress has played a HUGE role in our infertility issues and that is why, after ALL these months, we are still trying naturally (life is less stressful now... apart from not being able to conceive).... I have a cycle and a half before I go back to talk about "next steps" so we're trying to give it our all... so.....

I think this is what we are supposed to do but please correct or add on:

-dh makes a deposit (thinking of just using a small glass bowl: can we hand wash in hot? or is it better to boil?)

-then we use a needless syringe (making sure all the air is out) to suck as much up as we can before SLOWLY putting-er right up near my cervix

-I hang out for half and our or so (and I guess I'm supposed to try and orgasm to help suck those guys up....so I guess that too )

and that's it?

should I try and get all of the semen in me... like as many syringes full that I can until its all used up or is it ok to just use one syringe full and call it a day?

I'm not temping anymore (thermometer shattered on the floor a few months ago) but would generally O between cd14 and 18 so I was thinking starting on cd11 and going through cd18 or something. I think some days we'll dtd and then some days we will do insemination but were thinking of getting something in me every 24 hours since we've never been able to try that much. should we be doing it more like every 18 hours or 36 hours?

and preseed? I have some. it makes me sting a little (oh the fun with vag pain never ends... even the most gentle and glycerine free of products aren't always great for me...ugh) but not terribly and although I do have some ewcm its generally thick, kind of a one or two time find and just in general I run a little dry... which could also be part of our problem so I was thinking of using some vaginally before the insemination? or would it be better to do after? or if I have at least a little ewcm does it really matter anyway?

if anyone has thoughts or has tried this themselves or has vulvodynia and still managed to conceive successfully... I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks

and I was also wondering.... can we use one of dh's semen samples two days in a row? like, is there a way to save it in the fridge or something...we were thinking probably not but thought I'd ask (ps. we don't have a freezer)

no... and at-home freezing wouldn't work anyway. The medical freezing is done in a way that makes it impossible to do correctly at home.

vivica....I just saw your other "home insemination" question... I think if there aren't more reply's I should probably move this to another area but not sure where....?

although I think the answer is that its probably better than nothing just shoving your dh's semen up inside ya! I think the orgasming afterward can help because the cervix dips down and makes it easier for and/or (or something) sucks those guys where they need to be going... good luck to you!!!

Lapis... I think you have it down pretty good. I also think every day is best, if possible. As you said, either through intercourse or syringe.

I'm not sure I would recommend the Preseed if it irritates you. That could mean you're allergic, which could possibly interfere with your bodys natural mucous.

How bad is your pain? Could you use an Instead Cup? I've heard some great things about them, and found them really easy to use for home inseminations. The male simply does his thing right into the Instead Cup, and you carefully insert. Then there is no extra transfer of semen involved, less time for it to get cold, etc...

I've already read of women bypassing the syringe, putting the semen in the instead cup and inserting that and going to bed for the night, leaving it in...

if that wouldn't be too painful, I might try that once...

Instead of Pre-Seed, have you tried generic Robitussin to thin out your CM? Use the stuff that has no letters behind the Tussin, just the ingredient Guaifenesin. (I think that's how it's spelled.) I have been taking the highest dose the bottle says when I'm fertile and it definitely thins the CM. Also, lots of water! Good luck!

Oh, yeah! I forgot about "creating" EWCM. Mucinex works too, and the dollar stores now carry a generic version. Cheap and easy to use!

I did try taking Guaifenesin during a couple of cycles last year... but it didn't do much at the time and made my sinuses feel funny I don't know if I can get it here in austria over the counter anyway....

and i thought about doing the instead cup style insemination but again, I haven't seen instead cups around here... keep meaning to order a menstrual cup but of course keep putting it off in hopes of getting knocked up... the syringe style seems alright to me.

noordinaryspider may I ask why you were ttc with home insemination? I feel like maybe its more common than I realize and I've just been out of the loop or something

today is cd5 so just five more days and we. can. begin!!!

Have you tried Evening Primrose Oil from CD 1 up to O-Day? I take that in conjunction with the Guaifenesin, but I don't think the EPO helps me personally by itself. And, some people say drinking Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice during your fertile time frame helps. I haven't tried it, but ya never know!

Good luck!

thanks kinza...

yes I've tried grapefruit juice and epo cd1-ovulation (although I can remember if I was doing both the two months that I did the guaifenesin, so good to know they might work better together)

They have it at drugstore.com. Visit the site, and they will prompt you to choose your country & currency, then search for "Guaifenesin". [Site is in English]

Alternatively, this site has a listing of online shops that carry a product where the active ingredient is Guaifenesin. [Site is in German]

But I haven't tried this product, so I don't know how good it is. Last cycle I drank tons of water and had 2 weeks of fertile CM. It was mostly watery, though. I think my EWCM is hiding up in my cervix.
