Need to remove dairy from my diet

I have never had food issues with my nurslings, but with #3 I am having issues. If I have dairy, hidden dairy doesn't seem to be an issue yet, I have a nursling who is up all night with horrible gassy pains. The ped is putting him on Zantac but I am also going to start him on some probiotics to help his little gut.
I am seeking suggestions for dairy replacers, I am not a huge fan of soy but if that is my only option I will do it...but any other suggestions??

Thanks

Do you have an inkling that it's dairy or did the ped recommend dairy, since it's the most common? If you substitute soy, you might not have any improvement, as a lot of kids who can't have dairy, also can't have soy. We use rice milk (DD2 drinks it) and coconut milk (higher fat, more nutrition, we use for baking, making coconut milk yogurt, smoothies, etc.). I like almond milk (though since we took it out of DS's diet, we don't have it anymore), and some people like hemp milk. We use Purely Decadent and Coconut Bliss coconut milk ice cream (yum). We don't do dairy, soy, corn, gluten, and a host of other things... so the only "cheese" I use is this ricotta, with a few alterations. It's great for things like eggplant parmesan. Sometimes it's things like tomato that cause issues too. So while you're taking out dairy, you may want to start keeping a food journal to see if you've caught the culprit or not.

I agree w/pp. I took out all dairy (hidden and not) and still had issues. Finally got everything under control with dairy, soy and eggs out of my diet. A food journal is a great idea. I also drink rice milk as does dd, now 18 months occasionally.

My lo it was dairy soy wheat and corn.

Honestly what I did was not try to substitute with the exception of almond milk and trader joes brown rice pasta (very very good). Then I just backed off all my 'regular' foods and ate just veggies, rice, potatoes, fruit and meats. This really wasn't that bad once I got in my head I couldn't have certain foods, like bread (cause gluten free stinks). A total diet change worked for me. I don't know what your lo's symptoms are but my ds was vomiting a LOT and having bad heartburn. Very encouraging to change what I ate. It took me 2 1/2 weeks of changed diet to see difference.

Plus, even though my MIL swears it would work, switching to formula would NOT have been a better choice.

Good explanation of time period and why other foods may be bad. (though I'm sure you seen it.

I've removed dairy from my diet. I've also removed all obvious hidden dairy (that sounds like a contradiction). So I look at labels in the store, but I don't worry about if the chicken tenders at a restaurant might have had some milk in their breading.

I hate it, honestly. It's not easy. Some things I've found it doesn't matter. I can actually leave the cheese off of mexican food, for instance, especially if I add lots of guacamole.

I don't like coconut ice cream very much, but that may be because I bought vanilla, and I hate coconut, and the vanilla couldn't cover it (I think DD may have chocolate issues, though I might try reintroducing that soon).

I did buy some soy butter-pecan ice cream and it was great. I want to try almond ice cream next, because I'm trying to stay away from food made mainly from soy. But I have noticed that a lot of almond ice cream does contain soy.

I've learned to look for things like "whey" in the list of ingredients. And casein.

Little tiny bits of dairy don't seem to bother her, but I figure I get enough of that when I go out to eat that I might as well just be completely dairy free at home.

If you search for the baked oatmeal thread on MDC you can find a great recipe for a quick snack that is easy to make and easy to substitute ingredients to meet your needs. I replaced the milk with almond milk. I use peanut butter in place of the oil to add some protein. It's good for milk supply too, unless you have over supply.

smart balance light margarine is dairy free (some smart balance has milk in it, but the light margarine does not)

I use unflavored unsweetened almond milk to replace milk in most settings.

If garlic and onions don't bother your LO then I've even managed to make a passable white sauce without cheese. I made a roux with margarine, flour, and almond milk, and then added lots of garlic, onions, smoked paprika, salt, and maybe some other seasonings that I'm blanking on right now.

My ped suggested it, because I brought it up. Since he was born I was drinking alot of milk and eatting alot of ice cream (funny thing I HATE MILK! lol) When I took it out for a day or two I noticed a change. My mom said it was the "lactose" of course I tried the lactaid and the chewables...yeah he gassiness and spitting up came right back. I don't mind missing eggs and some foods I could careless about but lately this ice cream addiction is getting the best of me...lol I will be going to Trader Joes today (sigh, moving to an area in Nov where there isn't a TJ's or Whole Foods!) to get some almond and rice milk to try. Thanks for your help any more guidane would be awesome!!!
